How can software testers overcome uncertainty and ambiguity in requirements?

Ask questions early and often. If a ticket is being refined in a grooming session, ask clarifying questions. If development work is already under way and it has landed in QA, ask questions and clarify scope to be clear on expected outputs.

Generally speaking functional requirements are well written (application must do X). Non functional requirements are often more ambiguous (UI must be user friendly). Constructively challenge such requirements using static testing techniques and reviews.

Version control requirements to understand any changes made and ask clarifying questions discussing the impact of such changes to test strategy or product launch. Requirements traceability matrix can be a very powerful tool to identify potential changes to test scope and timelines and avoid miscommunication and gaps in testing.

I'm our test strategies we include requirements reviews and static testing as part of the process. You can use entry criteria for this as an example. We won't start a test phase until requirements have been reviewed by us.

We use meet and greets with the user base and video recording with them. We try to ensure we are considering the real users and their mindset. Exploration can start very early and doesn't have to be at the end of the rest of testing. Remember the application is ultimately for them.

Conducting collaborative exploratory sessions with team members can be valuable for generating test ideas. During these sessions, we can identify impacted areas, potential risks, and areas with a history of issues. Leveraging this collective wisdom can aid in the definition of the testing scope

Get involved early on and collaborate with product teams to discuss any potential issues in UX designs or mockups. Participate in HLD and LLD reviews with development to gain deeper understanding of the product and its implementation. Identifying issues in the design and development phase will help reduce the cost of quality and deliver a high quality product swiftly.

For me, it is all in the test planning, break down all requirements documentation and write down any gaps and scenarios unaccounted for, pass them to the Business Analyst and set up a meeting with the stakeholders, business users, developers to gain clarification, if this isn’t done at an early stage then you risk development that is missing vital functionality.
