Social media is no brain surgery. The single most common reason the content piece resonates with the audience is the relatability factor. As beginners when a person starts out, he/she may not have important insights to share but the journey itself can be very inspiring to fellow beginners. The important part to remember is to write something. The best way to start out is by adding value-adding comments. This is the best short-form content you can start with. Connect with creators, read their content, and give comments that are beneficial to all readers. The more you strive to add value, the better thinker you will be and you will start consuming content in a different way. This is a one-stop solution to write better and connect better!

Social media is a teachable platform for writers in many ways. Some of the ways It can help improve a writers capacity and fluency are ; 1. Firstly you get the opportunity to read other people's views whether experts or beginners and you pick one or two new words or style from their contents. 2. Secondly you get to understand how to write contents that people can easily connect to by the feedbacks you get whether by way of comments or likes. 3. It also gives a writer a broad opportunity to fly on different writing levels, this is due to the mix in the people online.

See question one about the lack of writing communities on social media. Not every writer is a novelist. Some of us are historical, Christian, and outdoor lifestyle enthusiasts with very few if any legitimate opportunities to share our experiences, thoughts or discoveries.

Consistency is the key when it comes to social media presence. Post regularly and maintain the flow of content. Do not compromise with your authenticity. Be real and genuine with your followers. Once you see the types of things others are writing and the pace that they use to share them, you can use this as a reference to build your own content calendar. Also, social media algorithms often show your content more to the people you interact with most, so your connections are more likely to see your work if you've had positive interactions with theirs before.

Some writers often think their inconsistency in having finished pieces of work automatically removes them from being active on social media, when really that is just a small slice of the pie. Talk about your process, show your day to day, find other writers who host workshops (virtually or not) and meet some internet besties. I have a few writers online that I am yet to meet, but those interactions are still effective. Share the highs and lows in your writing process. Reading is also a great way to keep yourself engaged in the lows. Every writer is a reader. Last tip, the tools are all great but if they take the fun of it from you, you might need to reevaluate and come back.

Even mistakes can be inspirational! For example, I once stumbled across a social media post where a woman wrote the German word ?Lidschatten“ (eyeshadow) as ?Liedschatten“ (shadow of a song). Beauty is everywhere - you just need to keep your eyes open!

I subscribe to YouTube channels for inspiration, and turn on notifications for people who post on LinkedIn. I also join Discord groups and Reddit groups to connect with other writers and access resources that are helpful to me and my medical writing group.

Learning from the success of others is all well and good but for me, social media lately has been about learning from the mistakes of my fellow freelancers. What people learned after 6 years of experience, I can learn in 6 minutes just by reading a post summarizing their experience.

I still remember when I first decided to start writing online. I read all the great writing gurus online. I dreamt of using their witty prose and reaping the rewards of millions of impressions and 1000's of likes. I forgot one thing: I forgot to actually start writing If you're writing on social media you should spend 90% of your time writing and only 10% consuming. If you want to get better you need to spend the bulk of your time writing. You need to send your work out into the world and listen for feedback. Analyse what works, what doesn't and keep most importantly: keep writing!

Social media can be rabbit hole; you could easily get stuck into a never ending cycle of writing advice. It’s ironic how many people consume this much advice but actually forget to implement it. Don’t let content distract you from actually creating content.

When you meet someone new and network in person, for example at in-person events, be sure to follow each other on social media and keep up with what you post. Encourage each other by commenting or liking their work, or even reposting it to share with your followers.

Talk like a real person. Sure, using a couple of big long words is good, but the more you use, the more you seem like you don't actually know what they mean. You're a person, not a thesaurus.

Social media can help you grow exponentially but it's important to not let yourself get lost in the sea of information out there. There are so many helpful guides, posts and cheatsheets just on LinkedIn that it's easy to get overwhelmed. Remember to pace yourself and instead of trying to learn everything all at once, focus on perfecting what you're good at. Slow and steady wins the race.
