How can social impact assessments improve EIA?
Environmental impact assessment (EIA) is a process of evaluating the potential effects of a proposed project or policy on the natural and human environment. EIA is a valuable tool for informing decision-makers and stakeholders about the benefits and risks of different alternatives, and for identifying mitigation measures to avoid or reduce negative impacts. However, EIA can also be improved by incorporating social impact assessment (SIA), which focuses on the social and cultural aspects of environmental change. In this article, we will explain what SIA is, how it can complement EIA, and what are some of the benefits and challenges of integrating SIA into EIA practice.
