How can social impact assessments help you avoid negative impacts on vulnerable populations?
Urban planning projects often have significant impacts on the social, cultural, and economic well-being of the communities they affect. Some of these impacts may be positive, such as improved access to services, amenities, and opportunities. However, some may be negative, such as displacement, disruption, or discrimination. These negative impacts may disproportionately affect vulnerable populations, such as low-income, minority, indigenous, or disabled groups, who may have less voice, power, or resources to cope with the changes. How can you avoid or minimize these negative impacts and ensure that your urban planning project is socially inclusive and equitable? One way is to conduct a social impact assessment (SIA).
