Generally, there are 5 migration strategies, the '5 Rs': 1- Rehost (Lift and shift) 2- Refactor 3- Replatform/Revise 4- Rebuild 5- Replace Choosing the right strategy depends on many factors, there is no right or wrong here. Usually, we need ask many things before choosing a strategy such as: - How much budget do you have? - Do you have an in-house team available or outsourced? - How critical is that workload? - What are the benefits for you with each strategy? - What are the available SaaS alternatives for my application?

It's important to know in which phase of the cloud journey we are starting. This could be done with an initial assessment on what goal we want to achieve. The options can be multiple depending on the particular case, and they could be: Rehosting (Lift & Shift), Replatforming, Refactoring. When migrating from one cloud to another, you should consider below things: 1. Existing services: Which services you are using in your current environment? All the existing services must be supported by the new cloud platform. 2. New services: Which new services can you use to improve your architecture? The main reason I migrated from Digital Ocean to Azure is the lack of services. 3. Compatibility of the service with your code: Let's say I want to implement auto-scaling for my product but what if my code is not compatible. I have faced one issue with Azure WAF. When I have added Azure WAF in my production environment, my application stopped working because of the firewall rule violation in our source code like SQL injection. 4. Pricing :)

You should also consider the security of the app deployed, may it be data security or network security, you should have proper dashboards which should alert you in case of anomalies, you should have playbooks / runbooks in place to handle issues, you should have a robust high availability setup to handle cloud datacenter downtimes, you should have the deployment strategies, testing strategies in place. You should have the logs pushed to a central logging system which you can query to find problems in your app and archival strategies in place to archive any old logs or instance snapshots and placing alerts for any cost increase is also mandatory.

Once in the cloud, the journey only begins! You need to review your Cloud allocations/usage/services regularly to avoid overpayment for services you really do not need... Are you/your company skilled and staffed appropriately? Do you need outside support to manage your cloud journey? Is the cloud solution secure? How do you integrate with your remaining on-prem applications and third party SaaS? Give it a thought and ask experts if you do not have enough skills internally.
