1 What is feedback?

Feedback is any information that helps you understand how well you are performing, what you are doing right, and what you can improve. Feedback can come from different sources, such as your own self-evaluation, your peers, your followers, your customers, or your mentors. Feedback can be positive or negative, formal or informal, solicited or unsolicited, specific or general. The key is to use feedback as a constructive and actionable input, not as a judgment or criticism.

I agree that feedback can be an incredible gift for a servant leader. Leaders who seek it consistently (year round -not just at points in time) and act upon it quickly build credibility and trust. In my experience, being transparent fosters and encourages a healthy feedback culture which ultimately impacts overall performance. Feedback can come in many forms including direct, indirect and even inferred. Inferred is the one typically least leveraged given it is less obvious but it can be extremely impactful for those who seek it and use it to take action in the workplace.

Feedback is an essential tool for servant leaders, as it helps them to align their actions with their values, understand the needs of their followers, develop their skills and competencies, and strengthen their relationships and influence. Through feedback, servant leaders can identify any discrepancies between their words and deeds, assess how well they are meeting the needs of their followers, recognize their strengths and weaknesses, and communicate effectively. This allows them to adjust accordingly, discover new ways to support their followers, seek out opportunities for growth and improvement, acknowledge contributions, appreciate diversity, and resolve conflicts.

As a servant leader, giving feedback is not only a responsibility, but also an opportunity to serve others. Before providing feedback, it’s important to consider your purpose and intention, making sure it is aligned with your values and goals. Additionally, you should be respectful and empathetic of the receiver's perspective, feelings, and needs. Furthermore, when giving feedback be specific and concrete by providing examples and evidence. Finally, be collaborative and solution-oriented by inviting the receiver to share their views and opinions. Ultimately, this will help ensure that the feedback is relevant, timely, appropriate for the situation, positive and supportive in tone, focused on the behavior or performance rather than the person or character, and that action steps are agreed upon with follow-up measures offered.

4 How to receive feedback as a servant leader?

As a servant leader, receiving feedback is not only a challenge, but also a privilege. When receiving feedback, it's important to adopt a growth mindset and learning attitude, as well as be open and receptive to the feedback. You should also be curious and inquisitive, asking questions and seeking clarification. Additionally, you should be reflective and responsive, taking time to process and analyze the feedback before deciding how to apply it effectively. Lastly, you should express your gratitude and appreciation for the feedback giver's effort and courage.

Create Google forms or different forms with set of questionnaire to take feedback from both juniors and seniors about your leadership. After getting your feedback you can easily know pros and cons of your style. Do 1-1 with your team members to give and get feedback bimonthly that will help you to grow and your team members to grow and your team will also grow.

As a servant leader, creating a feedback culture is not only a vision, but also a practice. To do so, you must model the way by giving and receiving feedback effectively and frequently. Demonstrate how feedback can improve your leadership and service, and share your experiences and insights. Additionally, you should foster trust and safety by establishing clear and consistent feedback norms and expectations. Provide feedback training and coaching for your followers, recognize their efforts, and address any challenges. Empower your followers by soliciting feedback from them and others, acting on it promptly and sincerely, providing them with feedback, involving them in the process, creating channels for exchange, and facilitating dialogues.
