1 What is Scrum?

The main feature of scrum is a review and retrospection of the work done. Software development companies widely adopt Scrum meetings. Scrum framework directly impacts productivity and quality of work done. Initially, it was adopted by software companies and nowadays it is adopted by each and every industry to make their employee more productive. By using Scrum methodology IT industry has saved billions of dollars. Scrum has helped many product companies to deliver their product faster. In today's hybrid work culture scrum methodology is widely adopted by each and every industry.

In my experience, Scrum is the most amazing framework to help the BD team. You can break down the targets into small actionable tasks. For example, if you want to achieve 100k you can create a sprint and break it down into small tasks like prospecting, cold outreach, follow-ups, and closing activities. Scrum boards can become the bridge between marketing and sales. Scrum also has impact on customer satisfaction as through scrum board customer can track the progress of their work and also can see the planning to achieve their work goals. By using scrum you can optimize the daily activity and track the productivity of the team. By scrum, you can easily find the bottle neck which blocks the individual from achieving their targets.

3 How to implement Scrum in your BD team?

To implement Scrum in your BD team, you need to define your product vision, create a product backlog, plan your sprint, execute the sprint tasks, review the results with stakeholders, and retrospect on the process and performance of the sprint. Defining the product vision means describing the value proposition and target market of your product or service. Your product backlog is a list of customer requirements, features, or tasks that your BD team needs to deliver. You can use user stories or value propositions to define and prioritize these items. A sprint is a time-boxed period, usually between one and four weeks, in which your BD team commits to completing a subset of the product backlog items. During this phase, you can use a daily scrum meeting to share updates and a sprint board to visualize the workflow. At the end of the sprint, you can use a sprint review meeting to demonstrate and validate the value delivered by the sprint. Finally, a sprint retrospective meeting will help you reflect on what went well, what went wrong, and what can be done better in the next sprint.

For the BD team first step is to define the backlog which is the target they have to achieve in a particular timeline. It might be a cold-reach activity. Through daily scrum meetings, the team can share their experience and enhance their pitch and prospecting style which has a direct impact on closings. Once the backlog is defined, the next step is sprint planning to set up broad-level goals. Once the sprint is planned, the next step is to break it down into small tasks. Once team members finish the task, it is time to do retrospection and gain some learning out of it. Retrospection helps the team to better understand their target audience and what business value they can offer to the prospect through their pitch.

4 What are the challenges of Scrum in BD?

Scrum is not a silver bullet for your BD team. It also comes with some challenges, such as resistance to change, unrealistic expectations, and lack of alignment. To address these issues, you need to communicate the benefits and rationale of Scrum, provide adequate training and support for the transition, manage expectations and scope, and ensure that everyone is aligned with the product vision. Doing this will help ensure that the quality and value of the product are not compromised.

Therefore, when evaluating the success of Scrum in BD, you must consider not only the output, but also the outcome and the impact. To assess the success of Scrum in BD, you can measure customer satisfaction, team satisfaction, and business value. For customer satisfaction, surveys, testimonials, referrals, or retention rates can be used. For team satisfaction, feedback, recognition, or turnover rates can be used. And for business value, revenue, market share, or return on investment can be utilized.
