Science communication is a key skill missing in STEM education. To begin with, small assignments in science communication can be included in our current curricula. For example, during my grad school, in the seminar class, our Professor assigned us to deliver a 3-minute thesis-style presentation. It was graded based on our classmates' evaluation of understanding. This was the first time we understood each other's projects; since we were from different fields, it had been challenging to do that before. We need to incorporate similar presentation formats that have been proven to work in science communication. We also need communicators who can mentor STEM students in factual but jargon-free and audience-specific storytelling.

2 Embed in courses

Another way to integrate science communication training into a science curriculum is to embed it in existing courses, rather than offering it as a separate or optional module. Something that would have helped me at undergraduate level would have been to be more exposed to science communicators and learn about their roles. There's a lot of opportunities and careers out there that I didn't even know existed when I graduated. Showing undergraduates that there are scientific careers outside of the lab/research environment would be extremely inspiring and motivating to some students.

Not every great scientist is a great communicator and sadly, not every effective communicator understands the science. As such, we need to find and study the few who are good at both. I can think if three that I would carefully study before designing a course about science communication: Carl Sagan, Neil deGrasse Tyson, and Bill Nye. Also, as a kid, I remember watching the French series “once upon a time…” by Albert Barillé. These series were put together with such clarity that I think it is an example of how great science content can be broken down for a diverse audience (in this case: children). Studying such work may also help put together better programmes to push for more effective science communication.
