In my experience with aerial and underwater robotics, simulation environments have been essential to appropriately preparing experiments in real environments. Tuning underwater and aerial robotics before deployment is fundamental to ensure safe operations, both for operators and for the robots. Wrong tuning of the robot might expose to risks the operators and the surroundings and lead to unnecessary damage to the systems. Imagine the harm a quad-rotor drone could cause to objects and people in its surroundings if wrongly tuned and not properly tested before deployment.

In my experience there are many reasons to use simulation tools: - cost savings: testing in a simulated environment is cheaper and safer and can shorten development time catching design faults early in the development process - safety: robots developed to operate in dangerous environments (e.g., open sea) require development in a simulated environment to limit exposure of operators to the risks of the environment. - inaccessibility of operating environment: before the deployment of robots in hard-to-access environments, simulations are the only way to perform first developments. An example is space robotics, recreating space conditions on Earth is difficult and costly, therefore, simulation tools are fundamental for the development process.
