I went back to get my EdD after working in the field of education for over 20 years. I had the practical knowledge and experience and felt successful at my job. In order to move in a new direction I needed to upgrade my knowledge and academic skills. It gave me background, knowledge and a new set of skills that complemented my experience and allowed me to move my career in a new direction. I felt more challenged, confident and prepared. It really renewed my passion for education and stretched me in new ways.

Academic research develops critical thinking and problem solving skills that serve students throughout their studies and future careers. By immersing themselves in scholarly literature and conducting their own investigations, students sharpen their abilities to synthesize information, identify knowledge gaps, formulate research questions, apply methodologies, analyze data, and draw evidence-based conclusions. The process nurtures curiosity, tenacity, creativity, attention to detail, and communication abilities. Whether presenting findings, writing for publication, or applying insights, research scholarship helps students master their fields and make meaningful contributions.

As an Engineer and aspired MBA holder, I really acknowledge the importance of research in guiding our solution-oriented minds with their on-the-spot limitations. On the other hand, I wish if I could receive some scholarships during my B.tech, I could outclass my peers coming from affluent backgrounds and networking. I could finally express myself without any mental pressure of money.

Research and scholarship are the best ways to ensure that the information processing model is truly utilised in the educational journey of a student. While studying any subject in detail, we need to utilise four processes, attention, retention, practice and retrieval. All these processes effectively come together when we research our area of interest. Going through various available literature on the subject, looking at areas needing resolution and then working to solve problems in the field, is the best way to be appreciative about a subject and understanding its true worth.

One of the values I always highlight about this is that sometimes a student needs to be able to demonstrate to themselves that they can follow this professional path. Research and scholarship push boundaries of a field, and in so doing, they necessarily need someone who is a skilled practitioner. By contributing to research at younger ages, you can see potential. One of my former high school students in a research lab went on to dedicate her PhD to me for this reason and two more of those students went on to recently run an NSF REU experience focused on this premise. One of them was awarded a DEI award for its promotion of inclusion in higher education. If done right, research and scholarship can build and foster inclusion. That's huge.
