At the end of the day, automation is actually just another discipline of the software realm, and as such it is bound by many of the same basic rules, assumption and restrictions. In this world, if you want to continuously add value, you have to evolve and adapt. The key difference in the case of automation is the fact that the effect of any action implement can be felt very quick. I love the Amazon's Leadership Principles. Three of them apply to the continuous evolution of the automation models: "Learn and be curious", "Think big" and "Dive deep". These summarize how to approach innovation for automation.
