I believe that with today's technology and data collected over the last few decades that power providers should be able to estimate the amount of energy needed for most specific areas around the country. That way they can estimate how much power is going to be needed for day to day use by their customers & build power storage facilities in those areas to provide the needed power of those areas. If they have a good estament & then add a 20 to 30% extra amount to their storage areas to cover any extra requests or losses of required power all the time. This would stop the over demand outages that people have at any given time like a storm or heat/cold wave in that area.

Smart appliances are devices that can communicate and interact with the smart grid, such as smart thermostats, smart lighting, smart plugs, smart water heaters, and smart electric vehicles. Smart appliances can help power distribution customers optimize their energy consumption, comfort, and convenience by allowing them to control and automate their appliances remotely, schedule their usage according to price signals or grid conditions, and integrate their appliances with renewable energy sources or battery storage systems. Smart services can help power distribution customers access and participate in various energy markets, programs, and initiatives, such as energy trading, peer-to-peer energy sharing, community energy projects, microgrids, virtual power plants, net metering, green tariffs, and energy efficiency incentives. I will have a higher likelihood of having power in my house due to the reliability of intelligent systems. 1- The ability for the grid to quickly detect faults and redirect power in the most efficient way 2- The ability for the grid to quickly and accurately analyze power load and demands and prepare to respond adequately

Smart is a relatively vague term, sometimes dumb is good for the wrong type of smart. Smart should mean fault tolerance, redundancy, not necessarily remote operation, recoverability, automation.
