From surgical subspecialties’ perspectives, it is not the lack of knowledge or communication skills that deter physicians involvement, rather, it’s the methods used for such engagement. As a physician that held several leadership positions in a complex healthcare system, I often encounter resistance from administrators to implement meaningful changes. The business forecast often displaces patient safety. Physicians are not blind to such misplaced priorities! Administrators need to empower physician leaders to enforce safety and quality initiatives that address their concerns. These initiatives should be monitored by well-designed process improvement metrics that can be modified according to outcomes.
