In the somewhat famous RFC 1855 document we are told to, "[r]emember that the recipient [of our communications online] is a human being whose culture, language, and humor have different points of reference from your own. Remember that date formats, measurements, and idioms may not travel well. Be especially careful with sarcasm." One useful method for good communication online is to write what you feel in a different program than your email or chat client and then rewrite it after you have read it through. Most people communicate first through personal emotion and then later through their rational thoughts. Allow for both modalities to occur but only press send after you have considered how others may perceive what you have written.

The simple act of standing up and being proactive provides value. You will always lose on every opportunity that you don't apply for. Your work and hard effort should pay off and that happens when you put it forward. Yes, you are aware of the bugs and short-comings. Those bugs are easy enough to disclose and perhaps the opportunity that you need for the proper resources to be allocated for their fix. At the very least, standing up signals a desire to be involved and if you have the capacity to be stand up and be counted, you also have the capacity to demonstrate pride in your outcomes which is needed in the outcomes of your future opportunities and collaborations.

People use programs on their computer. And the only mission of an operating system is to help those programs to run." (Revolution OS) As Operating Systems professionals we must understand that it is the applications running on our operating systems that provide the real benefit to users. By understanding those programs and optimizing resources, removing barriers, and securing the surrounding environment we provide our greatest value. Proactively joining app development groups where applications are develop ensures that optimization happens by design instead of afterthought.
