In mixing for a podcast, the clarity of the voice is your primary goal. A good way to do this is to use mid-side processing - use an EQ to dip the frequencies of your narrator in just the middle channel of the music tracks. To do this, use an EQ where you can switch from stereo to mid-side mode. Analyze where the speaker’s frequencies are, and then do a broad cut of those frequencies in the middle channel of the music track. This way the music still sounds immersive and lush, but the voice comes through clearly without having to punch through your mix.

I usually dip the eq on the music track around 1-2k. You’ll find the sweet spot by sweeping your band around and listening for where the talent’s voice sits. If there are spaces without dialogue, I bump up the volume of the music 2-4db. (I automate mostly by chopping up clips with fades and adjusting clip gain in PT so that I can always see my automation.) I also find that if music runs too long in a podcast, it starts to take energy away from the dialogue so best to use sparingly.

Two of the main jobs of music in narrative media are temporalization (creating a sense of time progressing in a linear fashion) and transition (making it obvious you’re moving to a new time and place). Temporalization can be done when you have a bunch of interviews from different times and places and you want them to feel connected and linear - adding a simple underscored track beneath all of them hides the differences between different recordings and makes them feel like part of the same “scene”. Transition is the opposite move - having an interlude between sections (think the Seinfeld bass lick) makes it clear you’re moving to a new scene, to a new location, and that time has passed.
