How can MRP improve lean manufacturing for manufacturers?

MRP seems to be very old concept.Now the trend is AJIT concept ( Auto Just In Time ) means Consumption based Replenishment.Parts required for the day only will come. Once the Production posted, Auto jit trigger will go to suppliers & supplier will supply the parts based on the triggers.This helps in Inventory reduction leads to huge tangible & intangible benefits. And also note that Safety stock to be clearly fixed based on the lead time & capacity of the suppliers. One more concept called Drop shipping or 3PL, setting up Warehouses nearby Customer.

MRP focuses on optimizing material flow and inventory management through planning and scheduling.Integrating MRP with lean principles can result in better inventory control, reduced lead times, and overall improved operational performance.

MRP is only as good as the data integrity of the system. If inventory levels are accurate, proper forecasting and demand planning are utilized, capacity planning is set up correctly, and all item attributes (lead times, MOQs, BOMS and routings) are accurate, MRP can be an effective tool for achieving lean manufacturing and reduce inventory costs. However, if the system isn't utilized and erroneous prompts are executed without buyers and planners analyzing supply and demand, the opposite result is certain.

This concept is true if policies are strict regarding quality standards, serialization, lot numbers, FIFO is used if appropriate, and inventory control. If the ERP/MRP system does not offer these concepts, or they're not used, MRP is no help with quality control.

I don’t think MRP improves quality by itself. MRP is more about right quantities, quality depends on other parallel controls when receiving and producing materials.

Now a days, lot of enterprises are following Demand driven MRP[DDMRP]. It works on following concepts: 1. Strategic inventory positioning 2. Buffer profiles and levels 3. Dynamic adjustments 4. Demand driven planning 5. Visible and collaborative execution. DDMRP requires no accurate forecast if implemented at all levels of manufacturing.

MRP is being used from very long in manufacturing for planning and scheduling of products and raw material/parts. Basically MRP work based on input received from demand forecast but now the demand uncertainties are highly increasing so in order to understand the end customer requirements MRP should be upgraded so that it can capture the real time demand or real time consumption patterns of products/SKUs. With real time demand details, MRP should give information on scheduling of products/parts and raw materials, this will help OEM and it's suppliers to deliver the product/part within required time to customer to achieve high customer satisfaction with optimised inventory. It will also help reducing bullwhip effect.

Purchasing, planning, manufacturing, warehouse, sales, costing and shipping Once those process are stablished, then we start to work on right inventory levels for materials and Finished goods and warehouse optimization. What I have found over the years that I have worked with MRP is that while it can be a great help to buyers and planners, it can be also cause several issues. Data integrity is the starting point for MRP utilization success. Item attributes, shop calendars, work center attitubes, lead times, etc all must be as accurate as possible. Also, planners and buyers have to use strategic planning to reduce lead times, maintain catalog stock levels and meet custom promise dates.
