This reduces the complexity to enable faster roll outs and adoption to technology and regulation.

In my opinion, Modular architecture in a payment system or ecosystem, can enhance flexibility, scalability, and maintainability in the overall solution. It helps to break down the system into modular/reusable components, updates or changes to one part can be made without affecting the entire system. This agility allows for quicker adaptation to evolving payment standards, security protocols, and business requirements. In my experience working with monolithic and modular architecture (Large corporate payment systems): Modular architecture enhances flexibility, scalability, and maintainability. Rapid development and deployment is one aspect that reduces your time to market for your clients. API/Services driven integration also brings in standardization and reduced cost in the long term.

Testing becomes more manageable in a modular system. Each module can be tested independently, allowing for more focused and thorough quality assurance. This can lead to a higher level of reliability and robustness in the overall Payment System.

In my opinion this architecture can be of utility if we are aiming to create a product that would be used by multiple institutions or banks or organizations. This way we can easily check their requirements and provide them with the necessary modules that would actually be just plug n play services. Also, just charging them for what they get. ?? Scaling may not be a great utility as a payment will almost touch all the modules. There maybe some modules that may not be visited by a payment flow and hence scaling just some particular modules may not make sense. We'd ultimately end up scaling everything. But configuring and wiring the flow would be easier. Some customer may want service 1 before service 2, other may want vice versa.

With all benefits there are some challenges. If the system is growing big, too many modules will be difficult to handle and maintain....infra cost may increase for creating connections to-fro connections between all modules which is quite lesser with the traditional method. Chances of data theft can increase if there are lot of entry/exit of firewalls....hence good Data security/encryption is a must.

Modular architecture for Payments Systems need to ensure alignment with other functions in the organisation, i.e. customer accounts & accounting systems, AML & fraud screening, etc. It sure depends on the business, scale and the level of system integration.

When an architecture supports modularity it means we can put each feature in its own module so that it builds in isolation, while still allowing it to be plugged into the application as a whole. The Composable Architecture is also modular, but we can run each screen of our application as a standalone app without building the entire code base.

1. Modular architecture will work if the system scope is clear from the beginning. Else team will end up creating a bunch of tiny modules. 2. If scope not clear, define boundaries for each module. Try to fit future scopes into any module. e.g. payment enrichment module , payment screening modules, message transformation module etc... 3. Define purpose of each module and accordingly define controls e.g. data reporting module should have access to only Database and no access required to the payment processing module. 4.
