There are things like VC-2 along with h.265 and now AV-1. But lets be honest if you cant get the video to the destination then it doesnt matter. you need to have a way to have all devices display and have a good experience. Some codecs will allow you to cheat on bandwidth. But some are heavy processing on the encode side and some are heavy on the decode side. you have to know your audience and devices you are going to. Because different devices handle codecs and protocols differently so in some cases you have to have a few options
