How can mid-career professionals share their expertise with others?

One of the easier ways to identify your audience is to think of the ‘you’ 3-5 years ago What were they like, what did they need, how did they consume information… Or you can look at the kind of information you want to pass across and identify who’s problem you’re solving. Use that to create your ideal client profile.

You should start with something you already do comfortably. For some it’s commenting on posts, or writing stories or talking to people. Something you’re already familiar with will make it easier for you to sustain and be consistent.

Many people know the value that comes from creating content, but are scared to get started or don’t know how. One way to ease into content creation is by commenting on other posts. This develops the habit of writing in a public setting and can also build community and trust with people in a niche circle. Once you feel comfortable commenting on posts and sharing your two cents, you can easily repurpose those comments into your own posts. One pro tip for commenting is to find influencers in your niche who get hundreds of likes per post. Click the bell icon to be notified when they post and leave a comment in the first 15-30 minutes after a post. Your comment will be more likely to stay towards the top and be seen by a large audience!

At every conference or community I've participated in, it's questions about SPECIFIC TACTICS that are asked the most. Especially when you get to a certain level of your career, it's easy to remain solely in the realm of the theoretical, sharing your wisdom about frameworks and strategy. While from-the-air insight is helpful, I think it can be more helpful if it's balanced with the boots-on-the-ground specifics. What tool do you use? What format do you use for your X guidelines or Y plan? How do you manage your approval process? Never assume that your day-to-day experience from one company won't be relevant to the day-to-day experiences of someone else in another company...it IS. My advice is to always include the small stuff.

It is helpful for people who want to get to the same level to see and hear from those who are already there. Just sharing pitfalls, lessons learned, etc. can be incredibly valuable for an audience who is earlier in their careers. Not only does it provide ideas for what to do or not do, it reinforces that we're all human and we will all make mistakes in our careers and they most likely won't end us. Growth mindset is key to success - learn from everything! That's a message younger audiences need to hear over and over again from many different people.

As a lifelong learner, I do think learning is a key aspect of our career development, but I consider knowledge sharing and adding value to the community of learners through sharing our own perspectives and ideas on the topics that are important to us.
