How can metrics help you improve your QA engineering practices?

In my view metrics as an abstract can be equated to the instrument cluster of an aircraft . It allows visualisation of direction and helps us undertake necessary amends to keep on course towards the goal.

The Software Metrics that the test teams produce are concerned with the test activities that are part of the Test Phase and so are formally known as Software Testing Metrics. Test Process Metrics: These measures provide information about preparation for testing, test execution and test progress. They do not provide information about the test state of the product and are primarily of use in measuring progress of the Test Phase. Test Product Metrics: These measures provide information about the test state of the product and are generated by test execution and code fixes or deferment. Using these metrics we can gauge the products test state and indicative level of quality, useful for product release decisions.

Metrics in QA engineering provide quantitative insights into various aspects of the testing process. Selecting and monitoring relevant metrics aligns testing efforts with business goals and ensures the delivery of high quality products . Regularly reviewing and adapting these metrics helps maintain their relevance and effectiveness of projects/ products.

I agree, but in addition to matrix one needs to have KPI’s keep performance indicators that drives process improvements. For example, if there’s a key performance indicator that measures repeat or rework issues. The organization has to determine how many repeat issues are acceptable within a given time. If issues exceeds that limit, Action needs to be taken to get that value back to acceptable limits.

Metrics are the best way to gather information on how we are doing on our QA engineering Practices eg if our aim is ensure defect free or zero uat or production defects then tracking these metrics will help us where we stand. But the most important way metrics helps is to understand the root cause analysis of defects and then improvise on our engineering practices including test case creation, test data, environment selection and test coverage. Metrics can give insights on all and help us improve by understanding causes of performance or non performance on goals
