1 Types of mechanical tests

Mechanical tests can be performed on materials for various purposes, depending on the material characteristics. These tests include tensile, compression, bending, hardness, and fatigue tests. The tensile test measures the resistance of a material to being pulled apart, while the compression test measures the resistance of a material to being squeezed. The bending test measures the resistance of a material to being bent, and the hardness test measures the resistance of a material to being indented by a harder material. Lastly, the fatigue test measures the resistance of a material to being subjected to repeated or cyclic loading. Through these tests, one can determine the elastic modulus, yield strength, ultimate strength, elongation, compressive strength, flexural modulus, flexural strength, fracture toughness, hardness, wear resistance, scratch resistance, fatigue limit, fatigue strength, and fatigue life of a material.

2 How mechanical testing predicts material behavior

Mechanical testing can predict material behavior by providing quantitative and qualitative data on how a material responds to different types of loading and environmental conditions. For example, by performing a tensile test, you can estimate how much force a material can withstand before it yields or breaks, as well as how much it can stretch or contract. By performing a hardness test, you can estimate how well a material can resist abrasion or penetration by other materials. By performing a fatigue test, you can estimate how long a material can last under cyclic loading before it fails.

Mechanical testing can also help you understand the underlying mechanisms and factors that affect material behavior, such as microstructure, defects, phase transitions, plasticity, fracture, and creep. Mechanical properties are unique in the sense that they are not studied theoretically from a microscopic system with quantum properties. The existing theories are not only based on classical physics but consider the system to be continuous, completely disregarding the atomistic nature of materials. Hence, given a solid with even a well known composition and crystal structure, it is almost impossible to predict its mechanical properties such as bending rigidity and fatigue. Thus measurements become essential to understand the material.
