How can machine learning professionals get the recognition they deserve?

Don’t build a portfolio by random choice, but rather one that focuses on outward contributions to your defined audience. Consider what type of profile you want to build, what knowledge you want to be known for, and seek out projects that demonstrate these skills. Some different profiles include eg - Specialist vs Generalist As a specialist, focus on a narrow set of techniques and libraries and help people understand when to choose what technique/hyperparameter/library. As a generalist, help your readers understand how they can be productive in any less focused situations, eg by comparing different types of pipelines, explaining when certain techniques will output other or how different techniques build upon each other.

1. Always start and stick with basics - Maths behind Algorithms, inferential and descriptive stats and at least one programming language. Don't run behind fancy terms and have patience to learn. 2. Building personal projects on similar real time use-cases which you worked in company or interested in. 3. Attending conferences, webinars and participating in hackathons to get additional experience

Any professional in general needs to focus on two things, 1) creating value, and 2) clear communication of results which over time creates an environment of trust and recognition. In order to create value, understanding the business case or downstream utilization is crucial. It ensures that their work aligns with broader organizational objectives and contributes meaningfully to the overall goals. Clear communication ensures that the insights, findings, or solutions are effectively conveyed to relevant stakeholders. Tailoring communication to the intended audience is key. This not only includes conveying technical details appropriately but also framing the results in a way that aligns with the audience's understanding and priorities.

Also, one way to increase visibility is by helping and teaching others. There's still lot of people who want a career transition to Machine Learning, but are unable to carve out a correct path. Ask them to start with Mathematics and then gradually learn Algorithms. Set theory, Combinatorics, Probability theory, Descriptive Statistics, Integration & Differentiation are few elementary topics one needs to know when doing ML. Building a portfolio around the same can also help.

To stand out from the crowd, the project portfolio needs to emphasis the business outcome in the specific industry the dataset is related to. Anyone can crunch data, apply standard machine learning techniques with a “high accuracy” on a given dataset. However, few ML engineers understand who to best build a ML model that will support an uplift in consumer spending in a premium segment (for example) and how to best deploy such model to maximise the business outcome.

Participating actively in your network, be it posting your stories/work program on LinkedIn or other groups, helps in gaining recognition for your work. This also assists in getting feedback from your peers which will in turn lead to better results and consequently better opportunities.

Public writing is a good exercise to solidify your thoughts, so I recommend it more than building a portfolio. And practice makes it easier with time.

Networking is pivotal in the AI field and tech in general. Machine learning professionals tend to focus on what algorithms they have applied, what’s the accuracy of the model, and how various graphs comes up such as ROC curve during their presentation. It’s really important to understand the audience and adapting presentation to audiences job functions. Another key is development of business acumen. Machine learning algorithms are pathway to meet business objectives. Breaking down business objectives into KPIs and focusing on KPIs rather than accuracy will win the confidence of the key executives. At the end of day, a project has to be delivered on time , under budget. Additionally, it should meet its goal.

I would say that act as a reseacher helps to understand how different areas have used some particular kind of approach as well as how they have handle data inside the context and the most important how their results can help you to improve your undertandings in the subject. I had the oportunity to do a research in a data-driven approach on industry segment, however, the significant insights towards my outcomes came from astrophysics and neural science.

The field of machine learning is like the stock market. There will be a lot of hype by people who don’t understand fundamentals. And you might feel overwhelmed by all the things that you have to learn. But remember, the fundamentals of statistics and pattern recognition (machine learning) are still the same and important. So, focus on learning a concept that you can apply repeatedly, rather than frantically studying courses as they come out without really understanding them. Fundamentals are more important than gimmicks. This alone will separate you from the crowd and make you worthy of awards and recognition.

I learnt this hard way: Having disruptive ideas and having acceptable ideas are two different things. Learning to make disruptive ideas acceptable is the key to recognition.

It's a long process, but the only way to achieve recognition is addressing the WIIFM (whats in it for me) of your audience. For instance, for peer recognition share tips and tricks you've discovered. For future employers write articles where they read about how ML was used to solve particular business problems. Ensure you make it something they can understand and pursue - the calls and recognition will come.
