How can machine learning algorithms predict and prevent machine failures?

My skepticism lies in the machine's dependence on the risks we're willing to undertake. If we bravely embrace controlled risks, it could potentially unlock new frontiers for exploration. But will it be enough?

Machine Learning (ML) Algorithms use historical data in its data Base and compares with machine operating parameters both external and internal to determine machine condition and then calculate the remaining useful life of machine. In so doing ML Algorithms can also be allowed authority to initiate automatic machine shut downs in case of for example over temperature or any other conditions which effectively reduce machine life.

Failures are uncommon events. However, some indicators will be there for the failure. For example, if the car tyre is very old and worn out it can predict poor breaking or even accident. So if we collect quality data we can use machine learning to predict failures

It used to be "periodic" checking by maintenance engineering to do maintenance. There are many problems with this, because they will not do through checkup or take the existing situation as granted. Listening to data and modelling failures lowers this cost as well as allows management to focus on specific operational issues compared with manual process. This is where ML algorithms help.

In practice, if a scenario arises that the algorithm was not trained on, and it is outside the input range of training data, the output will be unpredictable. The deterioration is very gradual and so you need to know what to look for and how to extract value from this data. It is not always we get all the variables required for prediction. For example, if we are observing a motor, do we have the operational temperature data? Two motors operating at different climate conditions will perform differently. Was the maintenance done the same way for both? Are there enough samples - for example if we are collecting printer failure data - do we have enough printers? Was the usage the same?

Decisions made by machine learning models can have profound social and ethical implications.
