You can also educate yourself on the history, culture, and values of different groups and communities that use your library.
Never make any assumptions of what a person would enjoy or prefer simply because they belong to a particular demographic. Many other factors may trump that one vital statistic. That, and every person is an individual- not just a member of a group.
I suggest librarians ask the end users. Create and administrator a survey that asks students to identify topics they are interested in learning more about. Use results to schedule and facilitate short focus group meetings after school in the library. Let students designate how the groups will be organized, structured, led. Also let students nominate and elect a group leader. Work with the group leader to schedule and facilitate meeting based on group feedback. Step back and let groups expand and grow organically. Feed discussions with fact-based real world global issues from the news or research findings. In other words, give students agency over what they want to know more about then be prepared to defend their choices.
One of the best ways to show respect for diverse perspectives is to listen and learn from others. Listening means being attentive, curious, and open-minded, without interrupting, judging, or imposing your own views. Learning means asking questions, seeking clarification, and acknowledging what you don't know. By listening and learning from others, you can gain a deeper understanding of their needs, preferences, and expectations, and avoid making assumptions or generalizations.
Communication is key to showing respect for diverse perspectives. Communication involves not only what you say, but also how you say it, and how you respond to others. To communicate with respect and empathy, you need to use inclusive and respectful language, avoid jargon and slang, and adapt your tone and style to suit different situations and audiences. You also need to be mindful of your body language, eye contact, and gestures, and avoid any expressions or actions that might be offensive or insensitive. Moreover, you need to acknowledge and apologize for any mistakes or misunderstandings, and show appreciation and recognition for others' contributions and feedback.

This means ensuring that your library's policies, procedures, collections, programs, and facilities are fair, equitable, and responsive to the diverse needs and interests of your community. You can do this by involving your patrons in decision-making and planning, soliciting their input and feedback, and collaborating with other organizations and groups. You can also use various tools and strategies to make your library more accessible, such as providing multilingual and multicultural resources, offering assistive technologies and devices, and creating safe and comfortable spaces.

The most important way that libraries can demonstrate respect and inclusion of diverse cultures is to hire employees at all levels that reflect diversity within the communities that serve. This especially important with children’s sections of libraries so children see themselves reflected in the staff and grow with role models who are information literate.
