I think before the advent of e-learning we already had Internet and much content was being learnt by students even though not in a structured manner, the addition of a teacher brings all information learnt into perspective and gives the student better learning. We emphasise students centered learning which involves the use of Internet and other tools to gain knowledge and this knowledge is applied to specific purposes to achieve learning, so this goes both ways because the tools used have specific questions and requirements to provide before and when using them and so they are able to collect useful data on any given student

Most Learning Analytics are digital attendance data: interactions, logins, etc. Some are very misleading such as time on task (without tracking student eyes time spent on a page is not meaningful). Finally, after collecting data on course activity we find that comparing courses is impossible due to various instructional approaches. As cohorts of students use the same course differently and instructors typically modify courses each time, the activity data is hardly a fair denominator. Learning Analytics are helpful to instructors who must interpret them in the context of their own intentions.

Online courses; I’ve done my share of them, challenge the learner not only in content but in interest. To maintain a fully focused and active learning response, the learner needs to be constantly engaged by the course structure itself. Academically, course structures are generally informative enough, but do they/can they keep the student engaged enough to want to keep coming back to the screen for more? From my experience, an online course that gives you the motivation to keep returning to your screen needs to be inventive, organised, full of charisma and collaborative. Balancing the above and remaining academically sound is a challenge not all online courses have mastered.
