This doesn't require delving into their personal lives, but rather understanding their strengths within the office. Discovering what each team member excels at, such as data analysis and creating clear visuals, allows leaders to assign tasks that match their strengths. By doing so, the entire team is motivated to engage and contribute effectively.

An aggregate sense of your team composition helps, and understanding their interactions will be critical to engaging individually as well. Remember the dynamic changes every time the team composition does- so re-exploring the team dynamic will be necessary under both new leadership and with internal hires and transitions as well.

In my journey as a leader, I've learned that truly knowing your employees is about understanding their aspirations, challenges, and what motivates them. I remember a time when a team member seemed disengaged. By taking the time to have a candid conversation, I discovered they were passionate about environmental sustainability, a topic we hadn't explored in our projects. Integrating this interest into our work not only reinvigorated their enthusiasm but also brought a fresh perspective to our team's efforts. This experience taught me that when leaders invest time in genuinely knowing their team, it not only fosters individual engagement but also enriches the collective creativity and productivity of the team.

To that end, leaders must get more intentional about building connections & fostering inclusion by: * defining what collaboration and inclusion looks like in daily practice * demonstrating how to seek out & embrace diverse perspectives * creating mechanisms for teams to resolve conflicts, provide feedback, & make decisions * providing ways for teams to recognize the collaborative efforts of their peers

Your teams- even a sales team- should never feel like they are in competition with each other. In early team building roles, it can be helpful to eliminate public individual recognition in favor of team building rewards that promote collaboration. Internal 'fun' awards can be a way to call out individuals for their individual contributions. Try initially avoiding an 'MVP' title given from the team leader. Teams tend to recognize this naturally and ultimately this will mean more to the team dynamic overall.

Fostering a culture of collaboration and open communication is pivotal. I remember initiating 'Idea Exchange' sessions within my team, where each member, irrespective of their role, was encouraged to share insights and feedback. This not only broke down silos but also nurtured a sense of belonging. One particular session led to a breakthrough in a longstanding challenge, a testament to the power of collective intelligence. It's moments like these that remind me that when communication flows freely and collaboration is nurtured, teams can achieve remarkable feats together.

Promoting & celebrating diversity & inclusion is an ongoing, intentional process that includes: * building awareness of unconscious bias' * communicating the importance of managing bias' * fostering a psychological safe climate where diverse opinions can be explored without ridicule or retaliation * ensuring pay equity * providing diversity education and employee resource groups (ERGs) * creating a cultural event calendar Celebrating diversity & inclusion helps leaders and teams fuel a wider range of ideas, expertise, & life experience & evolves any organization’s collective knowledge & performance.

By prioritizing psychological safety, you unlock the full potential of your team and create a win-win situation for everyone involved.

Individualization. Data is clear that bad leaders lead to disengaged employees, but there is no one right way to be a good leader for all of your team. When you individualize your management style while staying authentic and treat all of your employees as humans you have the best shot at highly engaged employees!
