How can a leader create a positive work environment in sustainable design?

In my experience a good way to achieve sustainabilty is to build diverse multi-disciplinary teams, widening the narrow points of view and allowing for feedback to flow into the team. Work the process slowly and allow contributors to have open and genuine conversations and address all aspects of sustainable development.

The same as in any work environment… support those around you and listen. The more you uplift those that work with you, the more that good things can happen.

To be successful in sustainable development, one must sublimate the ego and go for design solutions that are often indirect, invisible, or inverse of the typical showy architecture that passes for sustainable design. This requires the leader to be an exceptionally mature individual and to lead the way with a design that attracts attention differently than what one typically sees on linkedin or instagram.

Sustainability is a principle that applies to the workplace environment equally as to the planet. In both models, a natural balance must be maintained to where one species or team member does not dominate, or obliterate the other. Then, sybiotic relationships are formed and collaborative design flows freely. The success of the project depends on the successes of each team member and each project team including those of the owner, architect and contractor.

Respect for the work done to date and an mindset of constant improvement is key, and important to suggest specific ways that things can be improved upon. Instead of “This can’t be done”, think in terms of “This is how it could be done.”

Vernacular Architecture especially in the African context has always in some way incorporated women, an example is in the Maasai community women are responsible for building the "manyattas" and the skill is highly valued within the community given that men usually moved with the animals in search of pasture leaving women and children settled at a particular place before moving to another place. The Manyattas are deeply enshrined within Maasai culture such that they use readily available materials (cow dung, soil, straw bale/grass, twigs/tree branches) to make their homes, the form (round shape) serves several purposes; ventillation, defense, and social cohesion as a way of them showing their connection to the land and ancestors.

As a sustainable design leader I have been referencing African architecture more and more. I have found, thanks to guidance from architects like Christian Cole, that Africans often have native understanding of sustainable design and really creative solutions. This needs to be respected and I have tried to bring this out into a culture of inclusion and empathy.

As a leader I have sought to surround myself with people of different backgrounds, ethnicities, and approaches simply because it stimulates much more creative discussion! This has made it very easy to recognize efforts and promote women and people of color from this team.

El logro es parte del esfuerzo de los integrantes del equipo en la medida en que estos se sientan también libres de colaborar unos con otros, atrás quedó el deseo salvaje de competir y jugar en solitario. Las colaboraciones y reconocimientos en el momento justo impulsan el buen ambiente e inspiran al equipo para continuar creciendo.

Sustainable design requires in-depth analysis to be sure of the outcome. This requires a work environment that allows for research - a meditative and often frustrating pursuit in the go-go-go capitalistic environment of a modern practice. Honor this part of the work environment as it is important.

Providing adequate learning and training in sustainability/circular economy/regeneration to the team. Especially regeneration. Also give the team time to research old and new practices and the chance to explore them in their new designs. Make sure that cost effectiveness does not trump sustainable choices- where it might or does, spend time on that, find other models that will achieve cost effectiveness, talk to investors- refuse extractive wasteful industry practices.

Performance is top notch when an individual is stress free. Stress free mind comes from healthy body. Workload can be more at times but balancing it is an art and that is what true leader should always demonstrate. By managing the time of self, a leader can actually manage the time and load of entire team. This is proven fact if leader is systematic and manages the tasks with in time with advance planning, that makes the environment completely stress free and takes the team also to work on the similar lines. In such an environment, productivity always goes high. Team is ready to cross any line which demands extra mile and well balanced and well managed time is able to give time to their well being also.

There's good stress and bad stress. M. Yogita Sachdeva is correct that performance is best when an individual is stress free. The key to leadership is to understand what creates positive stress and negative stress with your work group and manage the pressures of deadlines and budgets with this in mind.

I think starting with a knowledge of self (skills, thoughts, ideas) automatically works towards efficient time balancing. The more precise and/or clear your "filters" are, the less time you waste. I think the team cohesion and knowing each ones skills, moods, weakeness, ambitions paints a very clear picture of what the limits are or when they are worth pushing over.

From experience, everything can improve. A manager has to be always open to discussion. And here, the "art" of collaboration is key. More than to listen, you have to able to assimilate information and exclude 'misinformation'. I don't think you have to be "serious" to be "professional" so it's about establishing a fine line between bonding, setting a mood, team meetings, team buildings and always carrying out projects with precision.
