How can jigsaw activities be used for cooperative learning in the classroom?

What is jigsaw activity? A jigsaw activity is a cooperative where everyone participates. The topic is exciting and engaging. It breaks classes into groups that each assemble a piece of an assignment and synthesize their work when finished. This cooperative-learning reading technique gives students the opportunity to specialize in one aspect of a topic, master the topic, and teach the material to group members. Asking students to work together in a Jigsaw builds comprehension, encourages cooperation, and improves communication and problem-solving skills. As a teacher, I make sure that all students enjoy the activity!

In my history classroom, I like to use jigsaw activities to explore broad topics--the Civil Rights Movement for example. Each student can research an event--a sit-in; the Freedom Rides; integrating Ole Miss; etc. Then have every student do a 'mixer' where they all meet one-on-one for short (90 seconds) periods. When they meet, each student shares their topic. Then the two students need to identify one commonality between their topics and one difference. After students have had an opportunity to meet many others, students can now engage in bigger discussions about the Civil Rights Movement, identifying common tactics, goals and challenges.

After giving students several minutes to study their rocks, the instructor asks the students to make groups of three so that each group has three different rock types. Students teach each other what they saw in their own rocks, and the group then compares rocks, noting similarities and differences. Thru this they will learned how to do by their own way of thinking and thru this process they learned better.

In my experience, jigsaw puzzles helped my students develop problem skills. Doing jigsaw puzzles also helped my students concentration levels improve. As my students put their puzzles together, they realized that each puzzle piece has its own purpose, and each puzzle piece was needed in order to correctly create the puzzle thus resulting in developing their problem solving skills.

When forming student groups, it is important to consider students’ strengths and areas for growth. For example, if one group is assigned a highly complex text to read, you would want to ensure there are skilled readers in that group who can support accomplishing the text. Groups are also supported by providing student roles. Consider which students would excel at various roles and distribute them among the groups.

How to Return to Home Groups? Students work with members of their “expert” group to read about and/or research their topic. They prepare a short presentation and decide how they will teach their topic to their “home” team. Once that is decided, students return to their “home” teams and take turns teaching their team members the material. I find it helpful to have team members take notes or record the information in their journals in some way. You may want them to complete a graphic organizer or chart with the new information. Everyone is involved in a whole-group review of all the content that you would expect them to master on the assessment. It is important to administer an individual assessment to arrive at individual grades.

After the students have engaged in reciprocal teaching within their expert groups, the teacher guides them back to their home groups. In these groups, students collectively review and summarize the insights gained from their peers, addressing any gaps or misunderstandings. To assess overall comprehension, the teacher may assign a quiz or project to each home group. Alternatively, the teacher might task each group with presenting their topic to the class using various mediums such as posters, slideshows, or skits. This not only reinforces understanding but also encourages creativity in knowledge application. To further stimulate discussion and reflection, the teacher may invite questions and comments from both other groups and themselves.

Peer teaching through this Jigsaw activity makes learners take responsibility of their leranings. They develop the 5Cs of 21st century skills - Collaboration, communication, critical thinking, creativity and finally confidence.

If the text is nonfiction, some of the vocabulary can be difficult. It is important to make sure the text is not too long at the beginning. Teachers should divide large amounts of text into manageable chunks that students work collaboratively to understand and explain to their classmates. It's interactive, purposeful (e.g. read to become an expert), promotes student-led discussions, and is a fun way to learn!

The Disadvantages of Jigsaw Activities There are some disadvantages of Jigsaw activities. These include the potential for one or two individuals to dominate the group, some students may not contribute effectively, frustration among students who prefer isolated learning, and difficulties for students who learn at a different pace than others in the group. These are all valid reason, but not enough to not play. The benefits out -weight the disadvantages.

Jigsaw activities are time consuming. Forming home groups then expert groups than again coming back to their respective home groups requires time. Once in blue moon, if such activities are conducted can be effective and fun. If done quite frequently, teachers will not be able to meet the deadlines to finish the syllabus in stipulated period.

Processing information is like eating a meal, it requires bite sized portions that are digestible. When we eat at home, sometimes we are neat, sometimes we eat two plates, and sometimes there's no food or appetite. Like eating, when we study, we breakdown information into bite sized pieces. An example. In class students are asked to remember all that they ate, including the ingredients, the steps, the portions, and even the conversations held at the dinner table. This is an extensive activity and not all students would be able to participate; it would not be "digestible". However when using a jig saw activity, all of these topics are addressed in hyper focused "hubs" that allow for detail, recollection, and shared experiences. Thank you.
