In my experience, introverts looking to expand their network can benefit from focusing on helping others solve problems or overcome difficulties. This not only can serve as an icebreaker for a conversation, but also demonstrates one's willingness to assist others. And for a programmer, there is no better topic than problem-solving. Once engaged, they will forget whether they just met someone an hour ago or have known them for years.

In my opinion, setting long-term goals for networking is essential because it shifts the focus from immediate gains to sustainable growth and enduring relationships. Instead of seeking quick wins, long-term networking emphasizes building meaningful connections and skills that will serve you well over time.

As an introverted programmer looking to build a network in algorithms, consider leveraging digital platforms and communities where you can interact at your own pace. Participate in online forums and groups related to algorithms, such as Stack Overflow or LinkedIn groups, to engage with peers and experts. Writing articles or blogs about your experiences and insights in algorithms can also showcase your expertise and attract like-minded professionals. As myself being an introverted person. To build a professional network, you must first acknowledge your desire to change and be consistent. You can start small at first and then later taking it to next level, by staying consistent. From my personal experience, my proposal would be to start by peer-programming with your team or attending lunchtime coding katas within your organization. Once comfortable, take it to the next level by writing blogs, sharing your knowledge through your network, and volunteering for algorithm-specific groups or organizing training events. This process takes time, but you will be contributing to society while building meaningful connections along the way. You will love it!

Instead of approaching big groups, try to connect with one individual at a time, and do take the time to understand others. When you less expect, you will few comfortable approaching people in a group.

Some of the best exchanges I've had, where I could really learn and grow, have been one-on-one meetings. Furthermore, I've personally found that if you manage to connect to someone on a more personal level, for example by having a coffee or lunch together, then technical and business discussions become much smoother and deeper, more essential. Don't hesitate to geek out over your favorite series, video game, or music genre, and you'll get to a place where you can discuss much more meaningfully.

People who are experts in a domain love to share their knowledge if someone is interested enough to listen carefully and act on that knowledge. Being generous once we have some knowledge in the area. I have seen even the most introverted people become eloquent speakers once they are talking about an area they are interested in and are passionate about. Programmers with significant speech impairments command rapt attention from their peers because of their command of the matter and because they are adding value to the discussion. Being cordial, respectful and kind at all times.

There are also certain audio-based applications like clubhouse and Talkvert which could help.

I have mostly used Github and Reddit to identify strong candidates, connect and co-build. Online platforms enhance visibility, and Open source works wonders currently. It helps you improve your code, identify potential users for your code as well.

I've found that finding a common purpose, typically through open source code, helps networking. Find a project you like show up and help out, go to their dev meetings and you have something to chat about that can ease the tension of small talk.

Never shy away from a conversation. This has been a big help to me. You can see this in a different perspective; you have two options, to initiate conversation or not. If weigh in the pros and cons, the only con is that the other person may not respond in the same way you wanted them to. But, whats to lose if that is the case? Hence, grab the opportunity to network!

Most times we equate networking with a wide range of bold activities such as talking and giving presentation. These activities might be overwhelming for an introvert, with that being said an introvert can benefit from networking by simply showing up and not verbally engage in discussion. This underrated idea can help an introvert build momentum, showing up and just listening to others network can help an introvert break the ice.

Social intelligence is a skill anyone can learn at any age. Flex your SI muscles and get lots of practice. Sooner than you think it will be second nature. And you don't need to be an extrovert.
