How can illustrations help you create a clear hierarchy in your content?

Illustrations are vital for establishing a clear hierarchy in content by guiding the audience visually and emphasizing key points. Larger or centrally positioned illustrations draw attention, and their contrast with surrounding content highlights important information.

As a fine artist I do feel this applies to me. I use compositional elements in my paintings. I would not call these hierarchy.

Without hierarchy, the text is visually unappealing and appears like an indigestible block. Many readers won't read it. It's obviously important to break it up into short paragraphs, inserting headings and sub-headings that summarize the ideas and make the reader want to read on. Illustrations and images are, along with the main title, the first things the reader sees, and are therefore essential as a hook.

You only have to look at how a magazine article is made to understand. Usually, the introduction features a large image related to the content title. Smaller images then illustrate the theme of each paragraph. The most basic approach is to use photos to represent exactly what is said in the text. But it's even more interesting to use images that provide additional information or perspective to the text. An illustrator can easily provide this added value, for example with a humorous or highly creative drawing that will give food for thought.

It depends on the content style, but in general you can avoid using too many colors in the illustration, too much detail... The key is to get straight to the point, so that the visual message is eye-catching and immediately understandable. The smaller the illustration, the less detail is needed, so that the eye isn't lost.

Larger, vibrant illustrations denote key milestones, emphasizing individual progress. A color gradient from subdued to bright hues signifies advancement. Fluid shapes reflect content adaptability, reinforcing the platform's commitment to tailored education. This concise illustration intuitively communicates adaptive learning, creating a visually compelling hierarchy within the edtech landscape.

You can be sure that most content on meditation will start with "an illustration of a person meditating in a peaceful environment". This is far too common and basic, and your content will be drowned out among all the others. In the example, you could focus on a less-represented element of meditation. Or take the opposite tack to the basic illustration: show someone in a business suit meditating.

An important point that hasn't been addressed is the need to stand out from other content (as mentioned in my contribution in paragraph 5). It's the role of the creative illustrator to find this kind of solution.
