In my experience, carefully defined and implemented IAM framework helps organization not only with ensuring right people have right level of access to data and IT resources but also improving efficiencies and reducing overhead via automated provisioning and removal of accesses. Imagine a new employee joined a new company and the laptop or workstation is ready with all required applications installed and with accesses to these apps already configured!! That would ensure productivity from day 1 ensuring cost optimization. Other non-tangible cost factors are saving or brand reputation, financial penalties from data breaches by ensuring low probability of breaches due to solid IAM framework.

IAM frameworks can help organizations reduce costs in several ways, such as improving security and reducing risks, enhancing productivity and user experience, reducing complexity and redundancy, and increasing scalability and flexibility. By following a framework, organizations can implement robust security controls, streamline and automate processes, rationalize architecture, policies, and tools, and design solutions in a modular and adaptable way. This can prevent unauthorized access, data breaches, fraud, reduce administrative burden and human errors, improve the speed and accuracy of access decisions, enable users to access resources with ease and convenience, eliminate duplicated or conflicting access rules, simplify integration and interoperability of different IT platforms and services, as well as accommodate changing business requirements without compromising security or performance. Organizations can also leverage cloud-based or hybrid IAM solutions to reduce hardware, software, and maintenance costs.

Automation of regular process like software deployment, patch update, password reset, access provisioning, user activities audit can reduce load on Helpdesk. Similarly centralized IAM will take care of SSO and application, server and network authentication - streamlining system ono boarding, user management and privilege access control.

3 What are some examples of IAM frameworks?

Organizations have many IAM frameworks to choose from, depending on their specific needs and preferences. ISO/IEC 27001 is an international standard for information security management that covers all aspects of IAM, such as policy development, risk assessment, access control, identity verification, and incident management. This framework is comprehensive and flexible, and can be applied to any type of organization and IT environment. NIST SP 800-53 is a US federal standard for security and privacy controls for federal information systems and organizations. This prescriptive framework covers various IAM topics, such as identity management, credential management, access enforcement, and audit and accountability. It is designed to help organizations comply with the Federal Information Security Management Act (FISMA) and other regulations. COBIT is a business framework for the governance and management of enterprise IT which includes a specific domain for IAM known as EDM03. COBIT provides a holistic and strategic framework that covers various IAM aspects, such as governance structures, roles and responsibilities, performance indicators, and maturity models. This framework is designed to help organizations align their IT and business goals, optimize their IT resources, and deliver value to stakeholders.

Advantages of using a frameworks is that you don't need to reinvent the wheel. Frameworks are put together by a group of highly experienced people and learned by a number of scenarios and put together best practices that could be followed by anyone. ISO supports you from the governance and risk perspective and COBIT/NIST from the technical part. Before start implementing those, plan your work by reviewing both group of standards/frameworks and compare with your organization's strategy, policies and procedures. There might be some aspects that are not applicable to your entity.
