Historical research provides context to how and what contributed to today's existence. It is almost impossible to address some challenges adequately without historical data. It is basically about understanding what happened yesterday that contributed to today's status quo and using the same information to develop solutions for the future/tomorrow. It provides an opportunity for both students and teachers to delve deep into the historical context and provide different perspectives, which may lead to a holistic solution if there is a problem that needs to be solved. It is applicable in many disciplines, for one to conduct any research, they require historical data.

History by itself has the positive and negative backlogs. May people apprise their good time and proud for it. They may never want to remember their bad memories. This is not good. By studying stories, people and politics, and cultural contexts, we can better develop empathy and understanding. The past is often also similar to the present, albeit not exactly the same. Learning the lessons from the past helps us avoid similar problems in the present, if we are only willing to learn what history has to teach us.

I would assert that a proper examination of various aspects of history would suggest no single set of individuals or cultures have a monopoly of knowledge, virtue, or even cultural value. Historical research is incorrectly reduced to an investigation of "what occurred?" Rather, it ideally seeks out "what was experienced?" and "how does the past influence my/our experience?"

True historical research can also create empathy and amend the black-and-white thinking of those transitioning into abstract thinking by exploring the complexities of competing human needs. Shawn and Brian make excellent points! My caution is twofold. The first is that students and people generally tend to look at historical events from the present context. Often, this leads to the conclusion and the question, "How could they not have known or be so backward in their thinking? A hundred years from now, people will ask the same question about us in our present time. You have to examine history from the perspective of those who lived in that time, not ours. The second point is that the further in years a historic event is in the past the more cloudy the historical analysis becomes. Memory, nostalgia, and opinion become more evident and less relevant to the accurate assessment of the event and its impact.

In fact, in an era dominated by the diversity of information and the diversity of its sources, students may be confronted with enormous historical information and they must understand it correctly using their research skills and critical abilities. I can try to guide students to go for topics that will make an impact in the communities around them. If there are problems it would be good for them to help solve. It will help them understand their past and that of the community as well.

In addition to identifying the key questions to investigate, I find much virtue in planning projects that are relevant to the interests, current circumstances, or identities of the students. Likewise, finding projects that assist in broadening their horizons outside their own local/personal attention is also a worthy endeavor.

Those planning the research must always include psychological anthropology. In other words, the neuropsychology of human identity in the individual that is the building block of destructive systems. Stereotyping is a basic human trait that's vital to learning. We build on past knowledge to categorize our universe. We cannot encounter the world anew everyday. The problem comes when that basic human skill is misapplied to other people, who are complex individuals and unique. I always begin my plans with a driving question. What is the ultimate aim of this investigation? What do we want to know? Then I move to sketching out my outline: how can I structure this piece to answer my question? Then I move to my research; this is where I allow for flexibility based on the information I uncover. Once I’ve conducted this research, I refine my plan, ensure it remains relevant to the driving question, and I begin to write.

Before you allow students to evaluate sources, teach a quick class on logic, in particular, logical fallacies. They cannot evaluate or use a primary resource without understanding the use of apologist stances, propoganda, circular logic, straw man arguments, ad hominem attacks, etc. You need to teach students those concepts so they can approach all sources with a critical eye.

In my experience, analyzing historical sources requires a multi-perspective approach. Here is where I disagree with several of my history and research friends. It is not the job of historical research to interpret an event, propose a supposition, or draw a conclusion. When historical research strays into supposition, it no longer examines the facts but becomes the researcher's opinion. There is nothing inherently wrong with suggesting or inserting an opinion so as long as the researcher states that is what they are doing. There is nothing wrong with analyzing history from an experiential perspective as long as the researcher states that is what they are doing. It's wrong to present a historical supposition as a historical fact. Supposition in research is not an acceptable practice in other fields. It shouldn't be in history.

The importance of history in the society has of late been underrated. The huge textbooks, detailed academic presentations, serious discussions and presentations have limited history to academicians. I got challenged by my daughter. She said I talk about history alot and she would want to know that history without necessarily sitting in class, how do I make that possible? Am still working on that thought but am sure it's a gap that we need to close. That history can be made interesting like a book or movie that people can yearn to watch and capture the important information which can inform social discussions like football
