How can grammar instruction enhance language learning?

There is concept called Universal grammar developed by Noam Chomsky. It suggests that people are born with the knowledge of grammar and some innate principles help us understand how languages work.

Mastery of grammar is essential for grasping the framework of a language. It's not just about memorizing rules; it's about understanding how a language functions at its core. This knowledge enables learners to construct coherent sentences and engage in meaningful communication.

When I was teaching in Korea, I would sometimes help students understand grammatical concepts by giving them an example sentence in English, and then direct-translating it into Korean without changing the grammar. The response, 99% of the time, was laughter and/or confusion, which allowed for the teaching moment. Explicitly pointing out the ways in which grammar works differently between a learners' native language and a target language helps learners grasp the inherently different structures of the languages and addresses common errors in the target language without inadvertently embarrassing the students who are making them.

Grammar instruction is essential when it comes to error correction. Due to the lack of proper grammar guidance students have fossilized errors that are very challenging to overcome. Feedback from both instructors and peers can play a vital role in error recognition.

A structured approach to grammar provides a clear pathway for learners to follow. Regular exercises and assessments allow for timely feedback, which is critical in identifying and correcting errors, fine-tuning language skills, and monitoring overall progress.

Practicing word classes can be highly beneficial for students of different levels of proficiency as it helps develop guessing techniques. Contextual clues and sentence structures enables learners to produce grammatically correct and comprehensible sentences. In addition, grammar offers creative solutions to form coherent and well-organized speeches.

Effective grammar instruction naturally leads to an expansion of vocabulary. As learners become more comfortable with grammatical structures, they can experiment with a wider range of expressions, enhancing both their spoken and written capabilities.

A solid grammatical foundation boosts metalinguistic awareness, the ability to think about and analyze language objectively. This skill is crucial for advanced language proficiency, allowing learners to not just use the language but also understand its nuances and subtleties.

Grammar is an abstract concept that needs to be presented in a clear, contextualized and concrete manner. Using familiar context in a marker sentence as a vehicle where essential meaning can be understood is where I would start. Then moving on to visibly outlining or writing the "form or structure" so learners could see helps in concretizing the abstract nature of grammar concepts - grammar timelines are very useful! Lastly, using careful and intentional concept checking questions will help establish the learners understanding. For me, a good balance between teacher and student fronted approaches when teaching grammar point is very important.
