How can GIS be used to improve public health?

We need to use all the tools in our toolbox to surveil disease to prevent cancer and other chronic disease. The COVID-19 pandemic really was a wake up call for us to use GIS and other spatial tools to better understand threats to public health. Overlaying the spatial distribution of environmental issues (i.e., contaminated drinking water areas) with incidences of cancer is another example of the need for use of tools like GIS to identify issues earlier to prevent disease.

The answer is a definitive yes but an overall understanding of the root causes especially in the mode of disease transmission is essential for a successful outcome-based justification. Remember that John Snow solved the problem of locating the epicentre of cholera outbreak at a time when the disease, its aetiological agent nor mode of transmission was unknown. Such competent investigative skills must be in place before deploying modern technology to further increase cost-effectiveness and timeliness for urgent intervention and effective mitigation.

GIS is useful for environmental impact assessment. In mapping out areas of risks and buffering the risk zones and using different color codes based on the types of risks associated with that area. I have worked in environmental risk assessments on oil spillage. I created a buffer zone using ArcGIS or mapinfo and produced a summary of statistics for different spill sites. Based on these, a description of the data model and key areas of risks, algorithms were developed using the spatial data. Then all these were mapped out. Data sets were collected using remote sensing, satellite images and real time data to extrapolate analytical models. geospatial analysis such as proximity functions,interpolation and network analysis is the next step.

GIS Science contributes immensely in the prevention of various diseases by providing timely mapping of location and spreading of disease causing agents and helps in better management of disease causing factors by providing vaccination, education awareness campaign, development of quarantine areas and gives best graphical trends of various activities.

Also, GIS data can be used to determine the population density, respective to the topography of an area, in case of a hard-to-reach area, one can decide to set up a health facility or a public standpipe (among other health care hardware and software) for easy access of the basic facilities, thereby easing health care planning and delivery of the required services.
