How can gamification drive innovation in software projects?

With nearly 70% of the workforce comprising of Millenials and Gen Z'ers, it is not surprising that gamification is a relevant mechanism for creating engagement and driving innovation on projects. Gamification of some the mundane tasks (testing, quality control) leads to healthy competition among peers and encourages micro-innovations in the workplace

Gamifying software projects makes me cringe. It could go very wrong if done badly. Incentivizing some measurable behavior, like pull requests, might have unintended consequences. The problem lies in creating a "game" whose results are aligned with the goals of your project. Shoehorning innovation in a highly structured project with well defined scope is an awkward fit. My suggestion would be a hackathon during the discovery phase of the project while scope is still malleable. Devs will want to show off tech. So having a product manager involved to focus product-market fit is crucial.

In my experience, Gamification is one of the vital ways to keep running innovation in an organization. People come together with ideas, create prototypes in a timeframe, and learn from each other. Some ideas can be merged to bring a complete comprehensive solution. When all resources are frustrated and tired, gamification brings energies back. Just one example of success due to gamification. During the tough time, I started one game of top achiever. Developer who fixed the maximum bugs, Tester who works on the maximum items, and the resource who works on the most complex items of the project will get chocolate for the day and will earn extra points. After end of the critical phase, the maximum point resource gets the treat as well. The outcome of this game was excellent. I have measured more than 50% productivity hike that time.

We know that uncertainties in projects, such as Machine Learning projects, AI itself, may appear and they need to be given due meaning to be managed in accordance with the strategy adopted in the project and the company's expectations. Creating a competition, for example, of whoever finds the best solution to this uncertainty, can frustrate other solutions that are not accepted, especially if this action was not strategically aligned, like "I'm going to create a gamification here, I'll get the best solution and presentation as a solution to project uncertainty", instead of in this case using collaboration

Implementing gamification to a company will trigger cultural changes (How staff views performance, proper behavior, rewards/remunerations.). Other than software team(s) involvement as well as ROI calculation, should definitely involves HR since gamification will be tied to Company OKR/KPI.
