For example, if we had information that a block of data is part of a compressed archive, such as a .tgz file, we would know not to try to compress it while writing it to storage. For example, at the file level, this type of meta information can be known or guessed for the file extension. (Not fully standardized, and not fully reliable, but more useful than not)
