How can ESG initiatives measure their social impact?

Social impact is notoriously tricky to measure. Although we recognize the utility of leveraging data to drive progress, it’s difficult to select a single number that measures commitment to human rights, or access to capital, or mental health awareness. We often rely on inputs to tell the story: the company invested $XX in communities, provided XX hours of training, reached XX students through its equal opportunity internship program, and so on. A more useful measurement focuses on *impact* — How did that investment create change? What result did the training yield? How did those student workers create more positive social outcomes? Use established, reputable frameworks when creating social KPIs — and keep the emphasis on impact.

What does good look like? It is an abstract concept. We can talk about impact in terms of how many people we reached. How much we invested in a social project. Or even, how we lowered the ratio of people in need of support year on year. When it comes to understanding data we have to settle on the fact that it may never be perfect, but by adding qualitative data, engaging actively with the people and communities you are trying to influence, you will over time gather real insights on then progress you are trying to achieve. This is not an excuse to just get on with things, it is still possible to set clear objectives and targets to progress on. Always keep the end goal in mind.

There are various metrics you could use to measure your social impact. The first steps would be to 1. define what initiatives do you already have in place and 2. what new initiatives may be relevant to your business. Once you have done that you will then be able to identify the relevant metrics for your business. Some examples of metrics include % of women in leadership positions, number of NGOs you collaborate with, total amount of donations you performed in a year, or metrics on ethnic diversity within your employee base.

Fully involve stakeholders in understanding what social impact means to them, not what you as a business think it is. This means an open communications channel to enable accurate and assured data to be collected and initiatives adapted for greatest impact by being reactive to timely needs

Moreover, companies can disclose information about their supply chains, labor practices, and human rights policies through specific reporting frameworks or transparency initiatives, which can serve as indicators of their commitment to addressing forced labor issues. And fieldwork if labor can reveal even more.

Organisations can start by collecting data through direct feedback mechanisms like community surveys, which can offer insights into the local effects of their programs. Social media analytics can also reveal public sentiment and engagement levels. For deeper analysis, organizations might use data visualization tools to identify trends and patterns or employ statistical software to measure changes against control groups. For example, a company promoting a literacy program might analyze pre- & post-program test scores within the community to evaluate progress. By combining quantitative data with qualitative feedback, organizations can paint a comprehensive picture of their social footprint and refine their strategies for even greater impact.

Yes, we cannot analyze that we cannot measure. Use technology for the analysis of data; this saves time and prevents biasing. Assign the role of analysis and interpretation to a third-party so that a fair decision is made.

Data-driven decision-making is an important method for ESG activities to assess their societal impact. Automated data gathering and analysis enable businesses to make strategic, real-time choices, which are required to meet sustainability targets. Furthermore, new technology can extract deep insights from data, opening the door to a world of novel approaches to support sustainable practices across organizations.

To measure impact, companies must use data from educational sectors, health, consumption trends, violence rates, economic indices, among other indicators, to guide impact analyzes before and after their actions. As my own experience, I worked on economic development actions in communities affected by environmental tragedies, and measuring the impact was only possible with the situational analysis of the region and communities. It is worth highlighting that this work needs to be carried out with multisectoral participation, including the analysis of other companies, deconstructing the competitive vision. Data isolated or individualized by a company can create misinterpretation bias.

Data used to evaluate your company can include qualitative data, e.g. stating specific ways in which you plan to include a just transition when working to decrease your impact on the climate, and comparing your plan and progress against what information is available from your peers' disclosures. Some advised social strategies related to climate transitioning are to consider the impacted communities' citizens' opinions on the changes and to provide training to current employees for new procedures or new jobs if planning to relocate manufacturing plants.

Companies need to develop transparency mechanisms with their stakeholders and society, including information about the real impacts caused by their operations and what they do to mitigate negative impacts. In many cases, recognizing that your sector represents risks and opportunities can help the market improve its controls and requirements for a certain type of product or service. Companies can and should promote an educational role, contributing to the dissemination of knowledge and conscious consumption in society.

Being transparent is one thing. Being honest is another. As companies tend to emphasize the communication of their successes they shouldn't shy away from communicating the obstacles and even set backs, too.

As part of effective communication, the organization should encourage two-way communication channels; are our stakeholders able to provide us feedback, express concerns or ask questions without fear of victimization? This will enhance dialogue and openness which is key in improving on the ESG set targets. Besides adopting ethical communication practices; it is also noteworthy to embed transparency as one of the core values in the organizational culture because this becomes ingrained in all activities, which includes reporting.

Transparency is the key to improvement. Your efforts could be in vain if this crucial step is not paid attention. Broadcasting the results to the stakeholders will ensure that the due purpose of efforts is realized. If your impact is not that significant, improve. If your impact is satisfactory, inform and invite others to collaborate.

Communicating sustainability advancements and strategies plays an important role for many companies' branding activities. These should reflect the real actions, challenges and opportunities a corporation is facing. Due to the imminent risk of "Greenwashing", companies should be aware of the reputational risks of intransparent or false communications around sustainability activities. Common information channels are websites, social media, Intranet or personal interactions, e.g. conferences or fairs. It is quite common to issue a sustainabiity reports, either as part of the annual report or separate.

This is exactly what due diligence frameworks advocate: an ongoing process to identify, track, monitor, and address business impacts. The UNGP presents a four-step due diligence system, while the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises recommend a six-step due diligence process. They are not mutually exclusive, in fact they complement each other and broaden the scope of responsible business conduct towards ESG implementation.

Flexibility in ESG is key. Considering how the legislation and economic landscapes change, keep ready to change course and adapt when necessary. ESG impact is a continuous journey, hence, being resilient is vital in order to deliver a strong and relevant impact.

Implement continuous monitoring of your initiatives reassess your goals and KPIs. Compare your performance against industry benchmarks and best practices. As I have said above, there is no shame in recognizing that our efforts could be better. In fact that is of paramount courage that we embrace the results. Evolution is the key to betterment. Keep improving.

Companies that are actively communicating with their customers, suppliers and employees can improve their common perception and demonstrate industry leadership when adressing sustainability in a collaborative approach.

Their thoughts and feedback are gold, building trust and loyalty. And it's not just sharing info; it's giving them the tools and chances to be part of the impact. It's like saying, "Hey, we're in this together!" Creating a stronger community is what it's all about.

By involving key and critical stakeholders, you are opening the portal to transparency and accountability. Often many initiatives are kickstarted without any definitive approach given to measurement of success.

Your Stakeholders are crucial in your social impact. They are not just mere observers in your pilgrimage, but the main actors which interests must be satisfied. Keep them current, keep them involved, but above all, make them an integral part of your strategy. They must not be only the voice, but the hands as well when it comes to concrete actions.

This is principle no 1 for social value- engage stakeholders ! Impact only materialised when we hear stakeholder voices and address what matters to them.

This for Society, thus Society should be dragged into this. However, the question may arise that how to do that? How is it possible to involve stakeholders when there is so much going on in their life? Start from the very beginning. Yes, start from schools. Why? Because kids have tendency to accept as well as question the status quo.

As working in a global company based in Germany I clearly see that with today's applicable regulations for CSRD, CSDD, Taxonomy etc. we are setting a benchmark for sustainable business in Germany and Europe. As a leading technology company we can also use this influence and become a leader for sustainable actions and sustainable business in countries that have not such strickt rules yet. As a big company this is also part of our responsibility and over time will bring sustainablility regulations on the global agenda, where it is needed.

With initiatives like CSRD and CSDDD in Europe we will get profound insights into value and supply chains. In the future it will separate the wheat from the chaff how a company will address issues in their value chain. Replacing a supplier? Working with the supplier to solve the problem. True leaders solve problems, right?

My experience has shown that tracking these metrics over time offers a clear, objective view of the social benefits and influences future strategy. Third-Party Assessments and Reporting - Utilizing external agencies to assess and report on social impact can add credibility and objectivity. I often collaborate with NGOs or independent evaluators to analyze the social outcomes of ESG initiatives, ensuring transparency and accountability in reporting.

Communication and demonstrating progress on social impact can demonstrate leadership in the area of social sustainability. In times of high uncertainty and it is ever important for companies to define and stick to their core values and make an impact. By demonstrating progress and impact with social sustainability and impact tracking, companies can effectively improve their recognition towards key stakeholders.

It is important to keep in mind that not only the S in ESG is about social issues, every ESG category is ultimately social. Tackling climate change, or plastic pollution, for example is in the end about improving people's lives and protecting future generations. Likewise when it comes to governance, governance is about fairness, transparency, and accountability, those are deeply social concepts. The S sits at the middle of E and G for a reason, this is because S is at the center of all ESG initiatives and activities.

Measuring the social impact of ESG initiatives involves more than just numbers; it's about understanding people's stories and community dynamics. To humanize this process, initiatives should engage in open dialogue, listen to community voices, and incorporate qualitative assessments like personal narratives. Collaborating with local stakeholders and conducting on-the-ground assessments helps paint a holistic picture of the initiative's real-world impact, capturing both statistical outcomes and the profound human changes they inspire.

The "S" might be a lot more complicated to measure than the "E" in ESG, it can't be ignored. Growing stakeholders demands means companies must prioritize the S along with the E in their ESG strategy. Also, don't limit the S only to philanthropic efforts - it should encompass social impacts across your value chain.

Always keep in mind that reporting is beyond numbers. Establish a feedback loop to gather insights from impacted communities. Use this input to adjust strategies and improve the effectiveness of social impact initiatives. Invest in building the capacity of local communities to independently address social challenges. Empower them with skills and resources for sustainable development. Also, ensure inclusivity in impact measurement, considering diverse perspectives and accounting for potential disparities in social outcomes among different demographic groups.

Most time I wonder how organizations plan and invest significant resources for the management of environmental aspects and then neglect initiatives to ensure the wellbeing of the human capital. When environmental monitoring are conducted and concerns are raised, it should become seamless to understand that the human beings working in such environment are highly exposed. This should drive initiatives for human capital management. Human capital remain at the center of sustainability hence any organization that does not consciously drive social sustainability with same level of commitment as it relates to environment and governance, isnt addressing the ESG indicators appropriately. The Social is at the center, bring E and G together.
