How can empathy inspire your team?

One thing I have found helpful is empathy can have many advantages for my team, such as enhancing and improving creativity, performance, collaboration, communication and reducing misunderstanding, conflicts and stress.

It is my opinion that empathy serves as a catalyst for team inspiration at work by fostering connection, trust, and collaboration. It builds a positive work environment, boosts morale, and enhances communication. Empathetic leaders should encourage innovation, support well-being, and effectively address conflicts. Doing this creates a culture that inspires loyalty and motivates the team towards collective success.

Reinforcing team collaboration is one in many benefits of empathy that would come to mind. When someone feels understood and not judged, it creates space for trust, making mistakes, learning from those, and ultimately better results.

In addition to the points mentioned, in my experience the empathy helpful in people relationships, improve trust, provides more collaboration and the people become happier in the work environment.

Empathy is understanding the feeling that the other person is experiencing, based on your own feelings, after all, we don't all have the same life story, experiences, needs, etc... And it is often very difficult to put ourselves in that position, but we need to welcome this feeling, listening actively and without judgement, because in our judgment there may be a truth that is ours alone.

Be open minded and stop analysing or judging as per your self-thoughts or behaviour. Just listen, and then reflect and articulate their experience and guide them or support them.

Real empathy comes when you are "listening" to the other person, not "hearing" what is said. Putting yourself in the other person's shoes first and understanding their action/reactions, and then stepping into your own shoes and giving insights of how you feel and would react is what is going to make a difference. Supporting in times of need, suggesting alternatives as a mentor, but not expecting it to be implemented as described are other ways to be show your empathy.

In my experience, one way to also show empathy is to listen empathetically. Here are some tips for a conversation: Avoid distractions; Do not be selective when listening; Do not rush the person; Avoid listening to what is said only from your perspective; Ask questions; Put yourself in the other person's shoes; If you have other commitments, leave the conversation for another time; Do not try to conclude the other person's thought before they do it.

By my experience, the challenge really comes when as an empathetic person, you are already channeling a lot of the other person's emotions, experiences, thoughts towards yourself, and working to support and help in every way. But when the other party does not empathize with you and your efforts, the balance goes for a toss. It's important to observe yourself, understand when it is going beyond your own emotional well being and step back from over doing your efforts.

Empathy isn't just a soft skill; it's a measurable leadership asset. As Goleman (1995) notes, empathy is a key component of Emotional Intelligence. In my experience, self-assessment tools like the Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI) have helped my colleagues and I reflect on our empathy strengths and weaknesses. Peer feedback through 360-degree evaluations have provided us with a comprehensive view of empathetic behaviors in action. In addition, metrics such as team collaboration and conflict resolution rates can quantify empathy's impact. Cultivating and measuring empathy is essential for marketing leaders aiming to foster stronger teams and authentic connections.

When we had our 1st baby, as a new parent I could more than appreciate the effort that we but more importantly my partner was putting in. A younger exec on our team, who was also a new mother was constantly requesting for leaves. When I told her that I understand how hard it must be for her because we are experiencing the same ourselves, she confessed that her Husband is really struggling in his job with his manager who is almost deliberately sending him for overseas trips. I recommended her Husband's profile to a friend who was looking for someone with similar experiences. As it turned out, he got the new job, had an amazing career at the new workplace, and she continued as a top performer, with a lot less leaves :)

Empathy - This is a true sense of cultivating an understanding of team dynamics and diverse perspectives. Inclusiveness & trust - Solicit input from team members with varied perspectives and backgrounds, and build trust by consistently delivering on commitments and being transparent in your communication.

To hear someone and experience true empathy may take patience. Sometimes when sitting down with folks there is a lot of white noise in the discussion as a frustrated person skirts around the true issue at hand. Be prepared for a possible lengthy conversation to be had and ensure your schedule supports this. Nothing can frustrate someone more than venting or discussing an issue only to be cutoff due to time/interruptions leaving the concern unresolved or compounded by a feeling of being even more misunderstood or worse, ignored.
