How can educational reform prepare students for a rapidly changing workforce?

The easy answer here is focus on soft skills and learning agility . The reality is we don’t know what exactly to educate them in when it comes to the hard skills that will still be valid and useful in 3-5 years . A more thoughtful answer may be considering exposing students to who they are . Their strengths and gaps as humans . Show them how to influence others and have great interpersonal, communication and collaborative skills. Teach them how to build great teams with the necessary skillsets to solve different types of problems. Challenge them so they discover their resilience and can operate in uncertainty . Let them practice autographing their work consistently with excellence ….. this is where I would focus !

Teach them to read. Read with precision and stamina and thought and knowledge and perspective and purpose. Teach the children how to read.

One thing I have found interesting in my experience is the impact of knowing facts/information in this era of pushing towards soft skills. Arguments can be made toward both sides however an integration of the two has to be made for true impact to be measurable. The age of learning to meet the needs of the future, require a strong foundation on the facts to ensure when skills are being developed we don’t forget the lessons learned and how not to reinvent the wheel.
