These include selecting the right methods and tools for your online learning context and purpose, collecting reliable data from dispersed online learners, analyzing and interpreting large data sets such as learning analytics or qualitative feedback, communicating and reporting your evaluation results and recommendations effectively, and implementing and sustaining the changes based on your evaluation findings.

One common method for evaluating a learning experience online is to survey learners. Not only do you need to ask the right questions, but they must also have the right scope. From my own experience as a learner finishing a course, I am often stumped with open-ended, general questions UNLESS I felt really strongly about something in the course. While the strong opinions are needed, they can tend to skew overall perception of a course. A variety of question types can help this, but careful planning is needed in order to make sure that the opinions of each learner is represented adequately

One of the challenges when conducting surveys and evals, particularly voluntary/opt-in ones, is how to make sure you’re capturing balanced and diverse feedback, making sure it doesn’t end up skewed towards the opinions of just a subset of “vocal users”. A key way to address this is understanding various forms of bias (eg. response vs non-response bias, plus many other types), techniques & tools you can use to minimise specific kinds of bias from survey design, sampling methodology, and response analysis.

An important practice when conducting evals, is timeliness - making sure the evaluation is done as close to the moment as possible so the user experience is fresh on the user’s mind and before they’ve discussed their experience with others.
