An example I have seen of leveraging drone flights is Live site logistic updates. For a 300+ acre project it’s hard to keep track of daily changes on site, and progress of basic activities like excavation, laying foundations, framing etc. When owners, designers and remote stakeholders of a project need to reference the current site conditions, they need only to look at the latest site map captured by the drone to stay updated.

Drones are a great way to capture historical progress on a project, particularly during frame construction. High resolution photos and videos can be invaluable if you need to find something later. One of my clients does an overflight of their projects three times a week. These photos are stored by date and we have been able to use them to find reinforcing installation details weeks after they are covered up by concrete placement.

We are still really early with this technology, but there are some great examples of robots assisting in masonry construction to help the mason lift and place block, and I have posted videos of Hiti’s exoskeleton device that can be worn to aid in overhead work.

A bit like with AI, I think we're only at the beginning of the journey with drones and seeing how powerful they can be within construction and engineering environments. As well as their technical uses, some of the best project footage I've seen recently is shot with drones and if this serves to get more people interested in construction and engineering careers then this can only be a good thing.
