Digital learning has actually helped people to learn while they earn. There are people who have to work to look after their families and do not have the luxury of a sponsor to embark on full time studies. They work to feed their families and to pay their tuition fees. Digital learning helps to reduce disruptions in their work schedules. Use of mobile apps such as WhatsApp has been useful in asynchronous learning where a student can look at notes and listen to audio lectures at a time that is convenient to them and outside working hours. They can also post questions for the lecturers to respond to as well.

Well, with tailored resources and adaptive tools, "Digital Learning" accommodates diverse learning styles and speeds. It breaks barriers, providing quality education irrespective of location or economic status. I agree. Digital learning, or eLearning, has come to enhance both children and adult learners. While some critics assert eLearning may have a negative effect on social skills, I believe it can also be very inclusive if collaboration is built into the courses. Digital platforms can be very interactive, thus braking the barriers of geographical constraints.

Digital learning is nothing new. I recall being given the hard sell by edu sellers back in the early 2000s, back then the digital learning was really just a glorified textbook. The digital platform was just replacing textbooks. Using the the Replacement, Amplification, Transformation (RAT) framework as a technology integration model and assessment tool teachers can critically consider how their integration of technology in their classrooms serves their students and themselves. It is only when we are amplifying and transforming that the power of tech in education is realized. Otherwise digital learning is just bells and whistles without substance.

Digital learning has completely changed since the early 2000s. Given Covid, this propelled online learning and LMS systems into implementation. I was teaching mathematics in Myanmar and with both Covid and Coupe online learning was essential. I was able to use IMathAS LMS and it has changed the way I teach both online and in the classroom. The issue is not the technology, it is getting teachers with old mindsets to implement the tools out there to be more effective. If teaching did not evolve, I would still not be using a graphing calculator. The tools are there, it is finding them and then getting the implementation done.

Digital learning offers the opportunity to design learning experiences that are not possible in the classroom. For example, the ability to use interactive storytelling or narrative simulations that can respond in real time to the learners’ choices and actions— these are things that aren’t necessarily possible (or easy to do) in a traditional classroom environment. Another word of caution though - gamification elements (like badges, etc), have been shown to increase engagement but they are not the best way. They rely on extrinsic motivation. Digital learning that intentionally leverages intrinsic motivation, making the game’s goals central to the learning, are much better ways to motivate learners in a digital space.

Working extensively with adult learners, I've emphasized the importance of personalized learning experiences, encouraging students to progress at their individual pace without fixating on time constraints. I often highlight that true success isn't solely about covering extensive content but rather about comprehending and effectively applying the learned material. By adopting this approach, in collaboration with my learners, we've established a dynamic framework that involves continuous progress assessment. This ongoing evaluation guides the direction of their learning journey, ensuring a more collaborative learning environment, deviating from the conventional one-way teaching approach often associated with traditional learning methods.

Personalization is the most important aspect on this list. If students don't see the point, none of the other points matter! The ability to truly personalize learning is where the tremendous transformative power of technology lies. We need to start asking ourselves big questions - WHY do my students need to know this? What would happen if they didn't? In the age of information knowledge for knowledge's sake is useless. Rather, students need to be able to do, problem-solve, and create. As I ask myself these questions, I am realizing that the world would not fall apart if I stop forcing kids to learn things they don't care about, and will in fact benefit when I use technology to empower them in building & unleashing their talents.

Digital learning offers us the opportunity to fulfill the promise of true personalization — but only if designed properly. In order to truly adapt to a learner’s skill and knowledge level, a digital learning program needs to be able to assess, in real time, what the learner (1) already knows, (2) does not yet know, and (3) is most ready to learn next — and then have the capability to serve up to the learner what they are most ready to learn. Additionally, technology allows this to happen at scale, for thousands or even millions of learners simultaneously. However, digital learning is only as good as its learning design, which is why its so important to have skilled learning scientists helping to design our digital learning products.

As enticing as digital learning is due to its accessibility—allowing learners to access materials at their convenience and from any location where facilities are available—this convenience ensures continuous learning engagement. However, in Nigeria, where I'm based, access to online learning facilities remains a critical challenge for digital learning. A considerable number of learners come from low-income households, where acquiring digital learning devices is often perceived as a luxury. Addressing the issue of access to these facilities is crucial for enhancing digital learning accessibility and can significantly impact the educational landscape by ensuring broader inclusivity.

A large part of my own education was through digital learning. It was convenient and allowed me to arrange my schedule with a completion focus, rather than a scheduling focus. It continues to be instrumental in my learning. Many students don’t have the accessibility to the internet or computers to work on. Until we close the accessibility equity gap, we will continue to struggle with closing all equity gaps.

Undoubtedly, digital learning has disrupted the status quo, fundamentally altering our perception of education, and its transformative impact will persist. This paradigm shift in learning has compelled educational leaders and practitioners to reassess their roles in fostering effective learning across all learner profiles. This shift isn't a passing phase; rather, it's a continuous evolution that will shape the future of education.

There have always been issues with equity in education. These same issues are present with digital learning as well. COVID-19 made us consider this concept when distance learning was enforced. It became glaringly apparent that lack of access to technology and resources played a major role in inhibiting student success. If we are going to utilize digital learning, we must consider what supports must be offered to some marginalized groups (i.e., at promise students, students with IEPs, etc.).

It’s true that there are a host of challenges related to digital learning. But those challenges are also true of in person learning. It’s important to note that engaging a learner in a digital environment looks different than in person learning. During digital learning, the learner is often working autonomously, which means mechanisms need to be built in to maintain engagement. Learning design that pays attention to pacing, when to call for interaction, when to switch media types, when to check for understanding, when to assess, when to engage in spaced repetition or review—all these and more require skilled learning design that is cognizant of both the affordances and limitations of the digital environment.

In the context of my home country Nepal, digital learning faces significant challenges due to digital divides. These obstacles include limited access to technology, inequality in urban and rural areas, socioeconomic disparities, linguistic diversity, teacher training and readiness, and just even electricity and power supply challenges. To addressing these challenges, in my opinion, a multi-faceted approach is required which involves government initiatives, private sector collaborations, community engagement, and innovative solutions tailored to Nepal's specific context. This can help bridging the digital divide and ensure equitable access to education for all students.
