Design research is an ongoing and cyclical process that should be woven into the product development process. It can be broken down into four stages: discover, define, develop, and deliver. In each stage, different methods and tools are used to collect and analyze data, create and test ideas, and implement and evaluate solutions. For example, in the discover stage, user interviews, surveys, personas, customer journeys, competitive analysis, and market research are used to gain understanding of users’ needs and goals. In the define stage, affinity diagrams, problem statements, value propositions, and user stories are used to frame the problem and opportunity areas. The develop stage involves brainstorming, sketching, wireframing, mockups, and prototyping to generate potential solutions. Lastly, the deliver stage utilizes usability testing, A/B testing, feedback sessions, and analytics to validate the solutions with users and measure their performance.
