1 Risk assessment

Risk assessment is the process of identifying and analyzing the potential hazards and threats that may affect a building project, such as natural disasters, fire, terrorism, crime, or human error. Design managers need to conduct risk assessments at different stages of the design process, and involve relevant stakeholders, such as clients, contractors, consultants, regulators, and users. By doing so, they can identify the most critical risks, prioritize them, and develop appropriate mitigation strategies, such as selecting resilient materials, applying passive or active safety measures, or designing for adaptability and flexibility.

Risks need to be identified at the start of the project and related mitigation plan. In addition, it should be updated frequently and immediately when a major issue is discovered. The design manager needs to continually coordinate with the discipline managers as needed to ensure risk is covered and, when needed, with related stakeholders Compliance with codes and regulations, client requirements, and performing internal audits on time is a keys to success

Design standards are the guidelines and specifications that define the minimum requirements and best practices for building design, in terms of safety, security, quality, performance, and sustainability. Design managers need to comply with the relevant design standards for their project, such as building codes, regulations, norms, or certifications.
