How can a dedicated scrum master improve your team's productivity?

A dedicated Scrum Master can improve team's productivity by providing direction to the team, keeping an eye on tasks in progress ensuring that WIP items are in check hence avoiding context switching and multitasking. Scrum master also ensures timely resolution of technical and non-technical impediments, remove blockers or distractions for the team thereby positively impacting team's productivity.

The Scrum Master acts as a facilitator during Scrum events, ensuring that they are well-organized and productive. They help the team stay on track, keep meetings focused, and encourage open communication.

I would say that a Scrum Master is essential to a Scrum team. An ideal Scrum Master is not easy. He/she not only has to keep an eye on the forest but also figure out how the trees will grow into that forest. Thus, the Scrum master requires that he/she to not only understand the business aspect (why the goals are important, the timeline that the business requires), but also convert them into technical goals and breaking those into manageable pieces, making sure the team is equipped to meet those goals, and monitor their progress. A tool that I find useful is the MBTI. The MBTI is not accurate but I find it useful to understand why my team took certain decisions in their work and also for me to find ways to maximize to their strengths.

In my experience a dedicated Scrum Master would help the Team focus on their Stories, Tasks while he or she can be the Facilitator there by relieving the Team from the Scrim Rituals. His or her focus would be to Clear any Impediments and help Deliver Value.

The Scrum Master embodies various stances, including servant leadership, coaching, facilitating, teaching, mentoring, managing, removing impediments, and acting as a change agent.

Scrum Masters can provide valuable guidance and support to teams, helping them navigate the complexities of Agile practices and continuous improvement. The coaching role fosters a culture of self-organization, allowing teams to become more autonomous and make informed decisions. Scrum Masters can bring a wealth of experience and insights into Agile best practices, aiding teams in achieving their goals effectively. Wearing coach hat empowers teams, promotes problem-solving, and contributes to overall agility and success.

A dedicated Scrum Master can improve her team productivity by ensuring the *Sprint* *Goal* and activities are geared towards the aligned product goal and customer value. As Scrum values promoter, Scrum Master can teach the team to stay *self-organized* and *focused* on the issues relevant for the Scrum Goal. In addition to facilitating the Scrum ceremonies, a Scrum Master can support by helping different teams to collaborate, resolve conflicts and escalating issues as needed.

There are other ways for a Scrum Master to show himself a Continuous Improver: (1) By applying it to the practice and showing improvements. As an example, by surveying the teams on how they see the retrospectives. If they don't like it, listen to them, make it valuable to them; (2) By engaging the agile advocates and running sessions driven by their agendas, helping them to develop tools and experiments within their teams; (3) By running Lunch & Learns, ideally with topics from the people's interests (survey them).

In the absence of a guiding hand, a collaboration could be like a ship without a captain, drifting without direction. The facilitator ensures discussions remain focused, that every idea finds its place, and that the team sails smoothly towards its objectives. Imagine a situation where disagreements occur, as they always do when different viewpoints come together. The facilitator, like a skilled mediator, steps in. The Scrum Master recognizes the importance of resolving conflicts constructively, turning potential roadblocks into opportunities for growth and understanding.

The term ScrumMaster is generally misleading coupled with the traditional behavior of people in such roles. It is not helpful to use in reference to the role you intend to be speaking of here. Does a professional sports team need a coach? Why? Does that coach help their productivity? How? The answers also apply to a "ScrumMaster" in the context of a software delivery team.

In large organizations the role, responsibilities and the authority of a classical project manager is well understood. The same is not true for the Scrum Master. Often SMs are external consultants appointed to "fix" the problem of missed deadlines who are supposed to have a magic bullet to fix "the performance problem" of the team but with no authority but responsibility. Unfortunately most issues lie outside the team. Without any authority or mandate to identify and fix these problems the SM is squeezed between the team and the management without any power. He simply becomes the crying wall for the team and punch bag for the management and his job is reduced to that of a ′ceremony master'.

Scrum Master as a trainer! Scrum Masters should help and support teams on their journey. And all starts with helping them understand it while setting some expectations for them, and learning where their ideas are coming from.
