Another benefit of creating data visualization is that it helps us think carefully about exactly what we are trying to say. While it is certainly possible to slap together a bar chart and call it 'data viz', following best practices for data visualization design guides us through the conversations about the intended audience, context, and meaning of the data. Those aren't discussions that happen around a database! Most importantly, most data visualizations by their nature simplify what parts of the data they display, so we can consciously make the choice about what the key insights we want our targeted audience to get.

Because data visualization requires choices about what to include, what to leave out, and how to frame the results (whether they are conscious or not), the dearth of relevant perspectives can lead to bias.
