How can data drive change initiatives?

In my experience, data management plays an important role to establish baselines, monitor progress, set up benchmarks and goals to keep organisation moving forward.

First, identify key metrics and establish clear goals. Next, empower your teams with data-driven insights. Lastly, create an environment that welcomes data-driven decision-making. This iterative process fuels meaningful change.

First thing first, understand the data and identify the biases that possibly skew the data and later the results. The bias could start from the perspective of the data collectors, the way they ask questions from the respondents and acquire data. If the question is not clear to the respondent, the data won’t address the root cause. Training the data collectors on questioning and probing respondent can effectively trigger the quality acquisition of data to support diagnosing the issues.

No Wonder, data is oil of digital economy and insights from data are valuable byproducts. Data driven diagnosis are usually logic driven and lead to clear understanding of issue/pain area/situation/deviation. Capabilities (inclusive of non-biasness or preconceived notions) of individuals doing diagnosis also contributes to valuable outcome. Finally understanding of context is important to stay focused.

Vision, substantiated with data (derived using various ways) can help providing shape and direction to an enterprise future. Vision derived this way, can also become a common steering when an enterprise meet challenges.

Define achievable KPIs, benchmarks for success / failures. Keep consistent monitoring and evolving with accountability and transparency.

finally, the fruit of all commitment, patience, consistency and diligence cannot be treated as one off instance. Instead it should become way of working, stepping stone to stay ahead always. Infact, become a change ambassador and motivate other to follow/learn from your personal experience. That's how you learn to give back to society.

In my experience, every change initiative must have champions. Depending on the organisation structure, a top-down approach facilitates the adoption of new initiatives. Data serves as the backbone of any effective change initiative, particularly for those in leadership roles. It enables the prediction of trends, the measurement of progress, and the identification of areas requiring improvement. The key lies not just in data collection but in its interpretation and application. Champions must develop the skills to analyze data, communicate insights, and lead teams in data-driven decision-making processes. In doing so, they champion a culture where change is embraced as a path to optimization and success, rather than feared as an unknown.

The key to motivating change in people is what is in it for them. Why would they change? They need to clearly understand that they will be better off after they change.

All of my clients are talking about data, specifically more so in the Public Sector Governments levels both federally and provincially. 3 key resonating themes are common across the country. First and probably most importantly is enhancing the citizen experience - using data to personalize new services transforming their digital experience. Secondly is risk management and security of data - citizens want to know that their information is secure and safe. Governments are responsible to the adherence of regulatory requirements and proactive risk mitigations. Thirdly, is the ESG initiatives - data on environmental impact can drive sustainability initiatives and responsibility programs to better serve communities.

Data Driven Changes - Subject Question There will be various thoughts on this topic, as changes are non-directional. Is this topic for Organization Structural level, Business Level, Technology & Operation level.. others may be Social & Economical level etc.. A different enterprise approach is required to address the objectives to develop the Data Driven outcomes and cognitive intelligence, which enhance the efficiency of business, operation or social factors. Continuous model upgrade is required to have an additional value proposition or score with greater accuracy.
