A critical thinker bears characteristics such as creativity and flexibility. A critical thinker analyzes and reasons through decisions and then communicates the outcome with comprehension and clarity. Therefore, with these tools in mind, critical thinking is a fundamental element of a consultant to provide professional support to their clients and intelligible resolutions in formidable times.

Clients often view their own organisational problems/issues through a tinted lens, and that is one of the primary reasons why they hire consultants.It's the consultant's job to present the problem as well as the recommended solution to the client as unbiasedly as possible, point out the said and unsaid assumption, call-out discrepancies and fallacies. Consultants can only do this if their Critical Thinking is sharp and edgy. As a consultant I feel, Critical thinking along with Stakeholder Management are perhaps 'the two most critical skills' for a consultant.

This is especially important for consultants, as they are usually hired to analyse and solve complex issues. Critical thinking helps consultants to avoid biases and fallacies, as well as to come up with educated and creative solutions for the problems.

Critical thinking in a way, gives you a vision to perceive in depth. In business what's more crucial is not thinking positively, but considering all the negatives which can affect business in a longer run. One such technique employed is FMEA employed by NASA, simply, Failure Mode Effect Analysis, in which they go through all the possibilities the project can get ruined at. A critical thinker will always think of negatives first to eliminate the same.

As a consultant, I can attest that critical thinking is a vital skill that distinguishes and adds value to consultants. A critical thinking consultant takes into account various points of view and asks perceptive questions that not only set them apart but also greatly enhance organizational success and client happiness.

Critical thinking can be partially learned, although I personally think that some people are better prepared, more open minded to think critically. Anybody can learn different tools and practices to enhance their critical thinking skills. You can apply them one by one, some might be helpful for your specific problem, while more complex problems might take you to try more than a dozen techniques. In that way, critical thinking can be thought of as a toolbox, the bigger the toolset you are trained to work with, the better the odds you will find the tool you need to suite your specific needs; i.e. to solve your problem.

Becoming good at critical thinking is hard work and it takes time. Knowing frameworks will not turn you into a true critical thinker, only training in rigorous logical reasoning and hands-on experience in applying it. But critical thinking takes more than training in logical analysis. Applying critical thinking in a difficult situation often unveils inconvenient truths. Therefore, many of us avoid it, not because we are unable to learn how to think logically, but because we are afraid of challenging deep-seated assumptions which may be inconsistent with reality, our own assumptions, or worse, those of our superiors. This is why, quoting Eli Goldratt, the critical thinker must have the courage to face inconsistencies.

Structuring one's thinking is the most critical when it comes to Critical Thinking. There are multiple frameworks one can use for this. My two favourite ones being- 1.) McKinsey famous MECE model 2.) Paul Elder's model for critical thinking

It involves questioning assumptions, using logic, embracing different viewpoints, examining our beliefs, and practicing regularly. It enhances our decision-making, problem-solving abilities, communication, creativity, self-reflection, and fosters personal growth and happiness. However, we must be mindful of common pitfalls like black-and-white thinking, overgeneralisation, exaggeration, catastrophising, minimisation, ignoring the positive, mental filter, negative labeling, mind reading, and confusing feelings with facts. In essence, developing critical thinking skills is a journey of learning and growth. It requires conscious effort and practice.

Embrace the so-called "first principles" thinking. Whatever the problem at hand, start with the very basics, as if you are consciously trying to rediscover the wheel. However, make sure not to take anything for granted. This way, you will be able to discover the very core of the problem at hand and successfully distinguish it from the observable consequences.

Just like LMs (Language Models), our minds/skillsets optimize with the wider our experience net is. Experiential and on-the-ground is what sets effective consultants to excellent ones. Anyone can hire an Ivey/MBA machine, but transformational consultants pave the way with strong intuition coupled with expert analysis all due to wider experience surface area.

Consistently practicing these strategies will gradually enhance your ability to think critically, analyze situations more effectively, and make well-reasoned decisions in various aspects of your life and work.

Ability to analyze complex problems, and present thoroughly prepared answers. 3. Ability to showcase case studies in which you overcame challenging barriers, stressing your decision-making process, thoughtfulness, and the positive influence on outcomes. During conversations, ask intelligent questions that reveal the breadth of your knowledge. Furthermore, make proactive and thoroughly studied recommendations based on the available data. This practical demonstration will strengthen your reputation as a seasoned consultant with keen analytical skills.

During client meetings or interviews, ask insightful questions that demonstrate your analytical thinking. Show genuine interest in the client's business by probing deeper into their challenges and goals. Engaging in thoughtful conversations displays your ability to analyze situations critically.

There is no best way than to show him/her your skills. Let your client see your in action, ask them to provide you with a challenge. Take some time to analyze it and build your approach, your angles. Take them with you and explain them to your potential client to let him know some of the tools that you could have used but didn’t because you assessed them as not usable. Have them participate, use techniques like six thinking hats, five why’s, alternative analysis, etc. Make sure you gather a client diverse team that brings together a very broad range of expertise and backgrounds. Develop a meeting that includes a collaborative agile dynamic. Let them know that you master many more tools than the ones you just showed, that was just a “demo”.

According to my opinion and experience, consultans are strength in any organisation, so critical thinking is crucial for them. After getting accurate data of feedback of Yr clients ,stakeholders and work force ,root causes of any problem can be analysed and evaluated which is fruitful for objectives and goals of Yr organisation. So, critical thinking must be engorged for Yr consultant s.

From what I've seen and heard, consultants are a company's strongest asset, so they need to be able to think critically.
