How can creativity be used to improve team communication?

Although visual tools can help get the good stuff out of people's heads, don't forget to allow for different styles of expression. For years I would dive headlong into brainstorms or workshops at full pelt until I realised that some people need time to land, to adjust and to gather their thoughts. This can be as simple as writing ideas down on paper or on post-it notes. Not everyone is 'visual', although for sure, mapping ideas is a great way to see connections.

They include software tools like Coggle, Miro, and Lucidchart for brainstorming, and platforms like Excel and PowerPoint for visualizing and comparing alternatives. Visual communication, such as GIFs and infographics, is also crucial for creating meaning for the audience and outlining processes.

Communication plans are essential for effective business and organizational communication. They involve identifying the current status, setting clear objectives, crafting a strategy, and summarizing the purpose of the plan. It's important to keep everyone involved and to be prepared for changes. Written communication is a key part of any communication plan, and it's crucial to ensure that the content is well-written and conveys the intended message, as poor writing can lead to confusion and potential legal issues. Different types of written communication, such as emails, memos, reports, and social media posts, serve various purposes and should be carefully crafted to achieve their intended goals

In my experience adopting a multi-modal approach can be beneficial. Relying on one type of channel might not work with your different team members' information consumption styles. Allowing members to work asynchronously is valuable, especially in remote working contexts. Also, get the team to contribute to their own preferred styles! What is their information consumption style? Try, monitor, adapt....

When creating a communication plan, it's essential to start by summarizing the strategy. This involves writing a brief statement that encapsulates the purpose of the plan. The summary should clearly outline the goals of the communication plan and provide a high-level overview of the strategy that will be employed to achieve those goals. I would advise to use humour carefully in team communication. Of course a relaxed atmosphere can elicit a productive environment but humour means different things to different people. I would say more importantly, know your team. See how they use humour internally and monitor this. A light inclusion at the start of a session might be more inclusive than a joke to kick off with.

Many employees have an introverted profile or are afraid to share ideas that may be rejected, which results in a lack of interaction and communication during dynamics. One idea is to incorporate a playfulness element in every weekly meeting, where participants are encouraged to suggest ideas to worsen the process, product, or challenge they will face in the week. This approach creates a more relaxed environment and motivates individuals who are not accustomed to communicating and sharing ideas to become more participative.

En mi experiencia, organizar sesiones de feedback con clientes o usuarios finales es de gran utilidad. Estas interacciones directas pueden ofrecer perspectivas valiosas que los métodos internos de retroalimentación no logran capturar, promoviendo una mejora continua basada en experiencias reales. Realizar un taller sencillo en el que se pueda conversar sobre lo que funcionó, lo que podría funcionar mejor y lo que no se debería repetir abre la mente y permite generar nuevas ideas.
