Online communication lacks vital visual and auditory cues, so misunderstandings easily spiral into conflicts. Injecting creativity and humor humanizes interactions and lightens the mood. A touch of levity shows you don’t take yourself too seriously. Humor disarms and opens minds. Clever quips and witty banter build rapport. Playfully highlighting absurdities rallies people to find common ground. Laughter transcends differences. With creative thinking, we can reframe contentious situations in a unifying way. A spoonful of humor helps the medicine of constructive dialogue go down. When tensions run high, a well-timed joke can work wonders.

I personally used humor when I taught a variety of courses that were under the umbrella of Conflict Management, to the in service membership of the New York City Police Department. As opposed to training recruits of newly promoted supervisory personnel, the vast majority of in service training is all to often seen as a some requirement the administration used as a “check the box” to satisfy the agency’s underwriters and or a law suit. The content was often delivered by a supervisor and took on the tone of a “never ending” roll call. My goal was to get buy in, break the ice, make the training, albeit mandatory, serve the officers a presentation that could support their efforts. My motto was, “I use this class to teach this class!”

After the team members get to know me a bit more they learn to understand me and my humor better.

As with everything, there are always challenges and risks with using humor. You should tread carefully when using humor especially if you don't know the acceptable cultural guidelines. If you don't know the person from the other side you can hit a nerve unintentionally. For example, making a joke about kids with a person who has trouble conceiving kids. I would say you are not responsible for hurting anybody because it's humor and you didn't mean to hurt anybody intentionally. However, the pain is there and just be mindful of this kind of situation.
